브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 기아가 영국 최대 규모의 장애인 대상 리스 차량 운영사인 ‘모타빌리티(Motability)’와의 협력을 본격화한다.
기아는 지난 3일 기아 사옥(서울 서초구 소재)에서 기아 송호성 사장, 김상대 PBV비즈니스사업부장, 모타빌리티 앤드류 밀러(Andrew Miller) CEO, 다미안 오톤(Damian Oton) CCO 등 주요 관계자들이 참석한 가운데, 영국 내 PBV 보급 확대를 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다고 4일 밝혔다.
모타빌리티는 약 86만 명의 고객과 약 3만5000대의 WAV(Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, 휠체어용 차량) 및 약 9만4000대의 EV 등을 보유 중이다. 휠체어 탑승이 가능한 전기차 콘셉트 모델 ‘eVITA’를 개발하는 등 장애인 이동권 향상을 위한 다양한 활동도 펼치고 있다.
이번 업무협약은 휠체어 탑승자를 포함한 모든 고객의 이동 편의 및 자동차 산업의 전동화 전환 방향성에 대한 공감대를 가진 양사가 이동약자의 접근성을 높인 디자인의 가능성에 주목하고, PV5 WAV를 비롯한 기아의 다양한 PBV 라인업을 활용, 글로벌 시장에서 대두되는 이동약자용 모빌리티의 전동화 전환 요구에 선제적으로 대응하겠다는 데 뜻을 모아 이뤄졌다.
PV5 WAV는 이동약자에게 보다 나은 이동의 자유를 제공하고자 하는 기아의 의지가 반영된 차량이다.
PV5 WAV에는 △휠체어 탑승자뿐 아니라 가족, 간병인, 운전자 등 모든 이용자에게 친화적인 유니버설 디자인(Universal Design) 콘셉트 △휠체어 탑승자의 편의성을 고려한 측면 승하차 방식 △휠체어 벨트 고정 시스템, 3열 팁업 시트 등 보호자가 동승해 휠체어 탑승자를 보조할 수 있는 기능 △넓은 실내 공간 및 휠체어를 접어 트렁크에 보관할 수 있는 구조가 적용됐다.
아울러 PV5 WAV는 PV5를 양산 중인 PBV 전용공장 ‘화성 EVO Plant’에서 생산될 예정으로, 불필요한 자원 낭비를 줄여 지속가능성에도 기여할 것으로 예상된다.
기아는 PV5 WAV 모델을 시장에 선보임으로써 전동화 시대에 포용적 이동성을 실현하는 첫 걸음을 내딛을 예정이다.
기아는 모타빌리티에 PV5 기본형 및 PV5 WAV 모델을 공급하고, 모타빌리티는 2026년부터 영국 현지에서 해당 차량들을 활용한 서비스를 선보일 계획이다.

이 밖에도 양사는 WAV 시장과 관련된 각종 정보를 수집해 향후 출시 예정인 기아의 대형 PBV ‘PV7’의 WAV 컨버전 모델 개발에 활용할 예정이다.
기아 송호성 사장은 “PV5 WAV는 교통약자들의 이동권 향상과 편의 증진에 기여할 수 있는 기아 PBV 기술의 잠재력을 가장 잘 보여주는 사례”라며 “이번 모타빌리티와의 MOU 체결은 모두가 지속 가능한 모빌리티의 혜택을 누릴 수 있는 미래를 선도하겠다는 기아의 의지를 보여주는 것이다”고 말했다.
