도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 7일(현지시간) 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과의 미·러 정상회담 재개 여부에 대해 "언제나 가능성 있다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관 캐비넷룸에서 오르반 빅토르 헝가리 총리와 가진 조찬 회담에서 '푸틴 대통령과 어느 시점 다시 만날 건가'란 취재진 질의에 "아주 좋은 가능성"이라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 앞서 예고했던 미·러 정상회담 무산 관련해선 "그들(러시아)은 단지 아직 (전쟁을) 끝내고 싶어 하지 않는다"며 "그들도 멈추고 싶어할 것이며 이 전쟁은 러시아에 큰 대가를 치르게 했고, 양국 모두 그렇다"고 했다.
또 "그 회담은 결국 제가 원하지 않게 됐는데 의미있는 일이 벌어질 거라 생각치 않았기 때문"이라며 "하지만 만약 우리가 회담케 된다면 (기존대로 헝가리) 부다페스트에서 하고 싶다"고 기존 입장을 재차 밝혔다.
앞서 지난 10월 16일 트럼프 대통령과 푸틴 대통령은 전화 통화를 갖고 헝가리 부다페스트에서 만나 우크라이나 전쟁 종전 방안을 논의키로 합의했으나 결국 불발된 바 있다.
이후 미·러 간 고위급 조율 과정에서 상호 이견이 좁혀지지 않아 회담이 취소됐기 때문이다. 더불어 양 정상 간 우크라이나 전쟁 종전 논의 역시 재차 제동이 걸린 상황에서 트럼프 대통령이 회담 재개 가능성을 거론해 주목된다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 오르반 총리와의 회담 관련해선 "그(오르반 총리)로선 (러시아 외) 다른 지역서 원유·가스를 확보하는 게 힘들 것"이라며 러시아산 석유·가스 구매 관련해 1년 제재 면제를 부여했다. 대신 헝가리는 6억불(약 8200억) 규모 미국산 액화천연가스(LNG) 구매를 약속했다.
그러면서 "헝가리는 바다·항구도 없어 어려운 문제를 안고 있으며 (여타 유럽 국가들과) 다른 위치에 있다"며 "파이프 라인 의존은 이념·정치를 넘어선 물리적 현실"이라고 지적했다.
