[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시는 11일 오전 유엔기념공원에서 전 세계와 함께하는 '턴 투워드 부산(Turn Toward Busan)' 제19회 유엔참전용사 국제추모의 날 기념식을 경건히 거행했다.
이 행사는 6·25전쟁에 참전해 대한민국의 자유민주주의를 지킨 22개 유엔 참전국과 198만 유엔참전용사의 숭고한 희생과 공헌을 기억하고 추모하기 위해 매년 11월 11일 오전 11시 부산을 향한 1분간 묵념을 진행하는 의미 있는 자리이다.
올해 기념식은 14개 참전국 유엔참전용사 및 후손, 외교사절, 6·25 참전용사, 정부·군 주요 인사, 시민과 학생 등 800여 명이 참석한 가운데, 참전국기 게양, ‘부산을 향하여’ 1분 묵념, 헌화, 인사말, 추모공연, 추모사, 주제영상, 헌정공연 순으로 엄숙하게 진행됐다.
특히 트로트 가수 마리아 엘리자베스 리스가 유엔참전용사 조부들과의 인연을 담아 ‘어메이징 그레이스’를 선보이며 추모의 의미를 더했다. 국방부 의장대와 부경대학교 학생 24명도 참전국기를 게양하는 데 참여하여 행사의 경건함을 높였다.
부산시 전역에는 이날 오전 11시에 추모 사이렌이 울리고 21발의 예포가 발사되었으며, 시민들은 이에 놀라지 말고 묵념에 함께 해줄 것을 당부받았다.

박형준 시장은 “세계 유일의 유엔기념공원이 자리한 부산을 향한 추모 묵념에 함께해 주신 시민과 귀빈 여러분께 깊은 감사 드린다”며 “부산은 유엔 참전용사들의 고귀한 희생과 뜻을 기억하며 세계평화의 상징 도시로서 그 뜻을 계승해 나가겠다”고 말했다

BUSAN — Busan held the 19th annual Turn Toward Busan international memorial ceremony Tuesday morning at the UN Memorial Cemetery, drawing more than 800 participants worldwide to remember the sacrifices of United Nations Korean War veterans.
The event, held every Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. local time, features a one-minute moment of silence facing Busan, home to the world’s only UN cemetery for Korean War veterans. This year’s ceremony included flag raisings, floral tributes, speeches, memorial performances, and video tributes.
Representatives from 22 UN member nations that participated in the 1950-53 conflict attended alongside veterans, their descendants, diplomats, government and military officials, students, and local citizens.
A highlight of the ceremony was a rendition of “Amazing Grace” by singer Maria Elizabeth Rees, whose grandfather and great-uncle served as UN forces in the Korean War.
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon called on residents to remember the valor and dedication of the veterans and reaffirmed the city’s role as a symbol of global peace and freedom.
Sirens sounded across Busan at 11 a.m., accompanied by a 21-gun salute, signaling a moment for the public to join in respectful remembrance.
The Turn Toward Busan event first began in 2007 on the proposal of Canadian veteran Vincent Courtenay and was officially designated a national memorial day by South Korea in 2020.
