필자는 “비록 중앙정보부(전3권/1990년대 초 출간)”라는 저서를 가지고 있다. 이 책을 발간했을 당시, 김대중 전 대통령(DJ)에게 전달하기 위해 동교동 사저를 방문했다. 이 책을 DJ에게 드리고, 동교동에 와 있던 한승헌 전 감사원장-변호사에게도 증정했다. 그 뒤 한승헌 변호사를 만났을 때, 이 책을 모두 읽었다면서 나를 살갑게 대해주셨다.
감사원장으로 재직할 때 였다. 큰 사건(?)이 벌어졌다. 국민일보(조희준 회장 당시) 창간기념 행사가 여의도에서 열렸었다. 나는 행사 시작 직전에 도착했다. 기념식이 시작되기 전이었다.
이때, 본부석에 앉아 있던 현직 한승헌 감사원장이 본부석 아래에 앉아 있는 곳으로 한발한발 걸어서 내려왔다.
"왜 아래로 내려갈까?" 모든 사람들이 지켜보고 있었다.
그런데, 한승헌 감사원장이 나에게로 다가왔다. 나와 악수하며 “잘 있었어요?”라고 인사를 건넸다. 그 순간 나의 어깨가 으쓱해졌다.
중앙정보부(KCIA)는 국가의 비밀 정보기관이다. 이 기관의 비밀 공작사(工作史)를 다룬 다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 이 책은 KCIA 방준모 전 감찰실장, KCIA 최세현(박사) 전 주일공사 등등, 미국 시민권을 취득한 KCIA 전직 요원들의 직접 인터뷰+비밀공작 자료 등으로 이뤄졌다.
이 책을 읽어 본 한승헌 전 감사원장. 그 분은 어려운 책을 저술한 작가인 나에 대한 예우를, 그렇게, 정중하게 표(表)했다. 두고두고, 감사한 일이었다. 나는 한승헌 감사원장 하면, 이 때, 이 장면을 결코 잊지 못한다.
그런데 김기만 전 청와대 춘추관장께서 지난 11월12일 한승헌 도서관 개관 글을 페이스북에 올려 주셨다. 브레이크뉴스에도 게재했다.

이 글에서는 “3년 7개월 전인 2022년에 작고한 한승헌 변호사의 모교인 전북대에 <한승헌 도서관>이 11월 11일 개관했다. 전북대 법학전문대학원 옆에 들어선 114평 아름다운 한옥 건물 도서관은 크고 웅장하면서 건축미 측면에서도 아름다웠다. 경복궁 근정전이 200평인 것을 생각하면 이 도서관의 크기를 가늠해 볼 수 있을 것”이라고 알렸다. “이번 도서관 개관은 고 한승헌 변호사의 유가족이 전북대에 발전기금 1억 원을 기부하면서 추진됐다. 여기에 국립대학 육성사업 등의 예산을 더해 총 6억 2천만 원 규모로 조성됐다. ‘한승헌 도서관’은 고(故) 한 변호사가 남긴 기록과 정신을 모교에 아로새긴 공간으로, 민주주의와 인권, 정의와 양심의 가치를 되새기는 상징적 장소로 기획됐다. 연면적 378㎡(약 114평) 규모로 100~150명이 학습과 토론, 휴식을 즐길 수 있는 열린 복합공간으로 운영된다.”라고 덧붙였다.

I own a book titled "Although the Central Intelligence Agency (3 volumes, published in the early 1990s)." When it was published, I visited former President Kim Dae-jung's private residence in Donggyo-dong to present it to him. I gave it to him and also presented it to former Board of Audit and Inspection Chairman and Lawyer Han Seung-heon, who was in Donggyo-dong. When I met Attorney Han Seung-heon later, he told me he had read the entire book and treated me with kindness.

I arrived just before the event began, before the ceremony itself. At that moment, the current Chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection, Han Seung-heon, who had been sitting at the main table, walked down to where he was sitting below.
