POSTECH 기계공학과 통합과정에 재학 중인 김주훈 씨(지도교수 노준석)가 올해 발표된 ‘세계 최상위 2% 연구자’ 리스트에 이름을 올렸다. 국내 대학원생이 이 명단에 선정된 것은 이번이 처음이다.
해당 명단은 글로벌 학술출판사 엘스비어(Elsevier)의 Scopus 데이터를 기반으로 미국 스탠포드대학교 교수진이 ▲총 인용 수 ▲h-인덱스 ▲공저자 보정 hm-인덱스 ▲단독·교신저자 인용 수 등 6개 주요 지표를 종합 분석해 산출한다. 이 지표는 QS·THE 세계대학평가, OECD 국가경쟁력 분석, 미국과학재단(NSF) 연구성과 지표 등에도 활용될 만큼 높은 신뢰도를 인정받고 있다.
명단은 ‘생애 업적(career)’과 ‘한 해(single year)’ 두 기준으로 발표되며, 올해 POSTECH에서는 생애 업적 기준 98명, 단일연도 기준 91명의 연구자가 선정되었다.
김주훈 씨는 나노임프린트 공정 기반 메타표면 대량생산 기술을 개발하며 학계의 주목을 받고 있다. 노준석 교수와 함께 가시광 영역에서 동작하는 메타표면을 대량 생산하는 데 성공한 연구는 발표 2년 만에 200회 이상 인용되며 차세대 메타표면 상용화의 핵심 기술로 평가받는다.
또한 ‘Nature Materials’, ‘Nature Nanotechnology’, ‘Nature Food’ 등 세계적 학술지에 주저자로 논문을 게재하며 국제적 연구 경쟁력을 입증했다.
김 씨는 “이번 선정은 개인적인 영광을 넘어 우리 연구실과 POSTECH의 역량이 세계적으로 인정받았다는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다”며 “메타표면 기술이 실제 사회와 산업에 기여할 수 있도록 연구를 계속 이어가겠다”고 말했다.

POSTECH Graduate Student Named First Korean to Become a "World's Top 2% Researcher"
A young researcher at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) active on the global research stage has been included in the "World's Top 2% Scientists" list, drawing attention from the Korean academic community.
Kim Joo-hoon, a student in the integrated program of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH (advised by Professor Noh Jun-seok), has been named to this year's list of "World's Top 2% Researchers." This marks the first time a Korean graduate student has been selected for this list.
The list is based on Scopus data from Elsevier, a global academic publisher. Stanford University faculty members comprehensively analyze six key indicators: total citations, h-index, co-author-adjusted hm-index, and citations by sole and corresponding authors. This index is recognized for its high reliability, being used in the QS and THE World University Rankings, the OECD National Competitiveness Analysis, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Performance Index.
The list is published based on two criteria: "career" and "single-year." This year, 98 researchers from POSTECH were selected based on lifetime achievement and 91 based on single-year achievement.
Kim Joo-hoon is attracting attention from the academic community for developing a nanoimprint process-based mass production technology for metasurfaces. His research, which successfully mass-produced metasurfaces operating in the visible light range with Professor Noh Jun-seok, has been cited over 200 times within two years of publication and is considered a key technology for the commercialization of next-generation metasurfaces.
He has also demonstrated his international research competitiveness by publishing papers as lead author in world-renowned journals such as "Nature Materials," "Nature Nanotechnology," and "Nature Food."
“This selection is not just a personal honor; it is also significant in that it demonstrates that our lab and POSTECH’s capabilities have been recognized worldwide,” said Kim. “We will continue our research to ensure that metasurface technology can contribute to real-world society and industry.”
