일본의 한 예를 든다. 이영일 전 의원은 브레이크뉴스 2024년 2월10일자에 기고한 “쓰레기 더미가 설치미술의 현장으로 변한 나오시마(直島)이야기” 제목의 글에서 “다까마스의 관광지(일본 시고쿠(四國))서의 매력은 도시 자체보다는 다카마스에 이어지는 두 개의 섬, 즉 나오시마(直島)와 쇼도시마(小豆島)에서 빛났다. 나오시마는 우리 서울의 난지도처럼 사람들이 살지 못하는 쓰레기더미로 방치된 섬이었는데 메네세라는 일본의 부호가 이 섬의 40%를 매입하여 개발에 착수했다고 한다. 관광지를 조성하는 것이 아니라 일본 전후 최고의 건축 대가로 알려진 안도 다다오와 제휴하여 이곳에 미술관을 건립하기 시작한 것이다. 그것도 현대미술의 새로운 흐름인 설치미술의 현장으로 이 섬의 면모를 바꿔나가기 시작했다.”고 설명하고 “매네세는 '경제는 예술의 노예가 되어야 한다'는 구호를 만들면서 거금을 나오시마 미술관 개발에 투입, 메네세 미술관을 비롯하여 섬의 곳곳을 설치미술의 현장으로 바꾸어 나갔고 우리나라 설치미술계의 대가로 알려진 이우환 화백의 전시장도 이곳에 전개되어 있다. 쓰레기 더미의 섬이던 나오시마가 이제는 안도와 메네세의 노력으로 미술의 섬으로 팔자가 바뀌어 버렸다. 이곳은 오직 걸어야만 미술관의 이모저모를 볼 수 있어서 나는 걷다보니 하루 2만보를 걸어야 했다.”고 소개했다.
우리나라에서도 이런 문화현상의 붐이 일어나길 바란다.
이런 즈음에 드디어 ‘이건희 미술품(소장 작품)’이 해외 전시를 시작했다. 국립중앙박물관과 국립현대미술관의 발표에 따르면, 지난 11월15일부터 내년 2월1일까지 미국 워싱턴 국립아시아예술박물관에서 ‘이건희 컬렉션’ 국외 순회전의 첫 전시(주제=한국의 보물(寶物): 모으고, 아끼고, 나누다)가 열린다고 한다. 전시 작품 수는 330점.
이 전시회는 국립중앙박물관과 국립현대미술관이 소장한 문화유산(文化遺産) 172건 297점(국보 7건, 보물 15건)과 근-현대미술 작품 24점 등 총 330여점을 소개한다는 것. 주요 전시 작품으로는 박수근의 ‘농악’, 김환기의 ‘산울림’ 등이 포함돼 있다. 이 전시회는 미국의 워싱턴 전시회에 이어, 내년 3월7일부터 7월5일까지 시카고박물관에서 열린다.
이건희 전 삼성그룹 전 회장의 유족들은 지난 2021년 이건희 전 회장이 모았던 미술품 2만3,000점을 국가기관 등에 기증했다.
