이재명 대통령이 23일(현지시간) 남아프리카공화국 현지 동포들을 만나 "잠시 떠나도 국가는 언제나 크게 자리한다"며 "더는 본국 걱정하지 않고 자부심 가질 수 있도록 노력하겠다"고 말했다.
이 대통령은 이날 요하네스버그 샌튼 컨벤션 센터에서 열린 남아공 동포 오찬 간담회에서 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "재외 국민들도 대한민국 국민으로서 대한민국 주권자이지 않나"라며 "그런데 비행기 타고 가 1박 2일로 투표했다는 등 주권 행사에 엄청난 제약을 느끼고 있다"고 했다.
또 "남아공 교민만 4000명 된다는데 대한민국 주인으로서 책임·역할을 다할 수 있도록 정부가 제대로 마련 못한 건 정말 문제"라며 "한인회 구성 활동도 정부가 지원 좀 하고 재외국민이 소외되지 않도록 해야 한다"고 했다.
이어 "지금 국회에서 재외국민들 투표를 전자투표로 하게 하기 위한 입법안들이 올라오고 있다"며 "사실 지금도 정당 당대표 뽑을 때 전자투표 하는데 문제없다는 것"이라고 주장했다.
더불어 "안전성이 검증 됐기에 앞으로는 재외국민 투표때 1박 2일 3박 4일 가야 하는 그런 일이 생기지 않도록 함께 노력하겠다"고 덧붙였다.
