우원식 국회의장은 23일 오후 김포공항에서 열린 광복 80주년 대한민국임시정부 요인 환국 재현 행사에 참석했다.
이 자리에서 우 의장은 "광복 80년 만에 처음으로, 정부가 개최하는 대한민국 임시정부 요인 환국 기념 행사에 우리 국민과 임정 요인 후손들이 함께 모여 광복의 기쁨과 환국의 의미를 되새기는 자리여서 더욱 뜻깊다"며 "오늘 신익희 선생 후손께 꽃목걸이를 걸어드리면서, 임정 법무부 초대 비서국장을 지낸 저의 외조부 김한 선생도 환국 비행기에 오를 수 있었다면 얼마나 좋았을까 생각했다"고 말했다.

이어 "임시정부의 정신과 유산은 대한민국 정부 수립의 토대이자 헌정 질서의 뿌리가 되었으나, 해방 직후 한반도를 둘러싼 국제정세는 임시정부 차원의 귀환을 인정하지 않았다"며 "개인의 자격으로 돌아올 수밖에 없었던 길, 귀환 날짜도 제대로 알려지지 않아 더욱 쓸쓸하고 서글픈 귀환이었다"고 말했다.
우 의장은 "오늘 이 행사가 뒤늦게나마 그날의 아쉬움을 달래는 차원을 넘어, 임시정부의 역할과 기여를 제대로 예우하고 그 정신을 올곧게 계승해 나가겠다는 우리의 의지를 굳게 다지는 자리가 되었으면 한다"며 "임시정부의 정신을 가슴에 새기며, 새로운 도약을 다짐하는 출발점이 되기를 바란다"고 말했다.
우 의장은 아울러 "대한민국은 전쟁과 분단, 독재를 딛고 일어나 세계가 주목하는 민주주의 국가·글로벌 경제 대국이 되었지만, 선조들이 꿈꾸었던 나라, 임시정부의 헌법에 담긴 민주·공화·평등·자유·평화의 정신을 온전히 실현하기까지는 아직 더 많은 노력이 필요하다"며 "임시정부의 요인들이 보여주신 용기와 헌신, 그 숭고한 뜻을 잊지 않고 계승하여, 더 밝고 정의로운 나라를 후세에 물려주어야 한다"고 밝혔다.
우 의장은 김민석 국무총리와 함께 입국장을 통해 들어온 임시정부 요인 후손들에 꽃목걸이를 전하며 "이제서야 80년 만에 맞이하러 나왔습니다"라고 깊은 예우와 존중의 뜻을 표했다.
