교육청은 27일, 2025년 경상북도의회 행정사무감사에서 지적된 ‘폐교 주변 어린이보호구역 유지 문제’와 관련해 이같이 밝혔다.
감사에서는 이미 학생이 다니지 않는 폐교 주변에 여전히 어린이보호구역 표지와 무인단속장비가 남아 있어, 행정 비효율과 예산 낭비가 발생한다는 지적이 제기됐다.
경북교육청이 전수 점검한 결과, 보호구역으로 지정된 폐교는 유치원 21곳과 초등학교 6곳 등 총 27곳으로 확인됐다.
이에 따라 각 폐교를 관리하고 있는 학교와 해당 지자체에 보호구역 해제 절차를 신속히 진행해 달라는 공문을 이미 발송한 상태다. 이후 각 학교에서는 해당 지자체에 어린이보호구역 해제를 공식 요청하고, 최종 해제 여부는 지자체가 관련 법 절차에 따라 결정하게 된다.
경북교육청은 올해 안에 아직 해제되지 않은 모든 폐교 주변 보호구역을 정비하는 것을 목표로, 지자체와 긴밀히 협조해 행정 절차를 빠르게 진행하겠다고 밝혔다.
임종식 교육감은 “폐교 지역에 불필요한 보호구역이 남아 있는 문제는 도민의 불편과 행정비용 부담을 키울 수 있다”며 “지자체와 적극 협력해 빠른 시일 내에 해제를 마치고 교육 행정의 효율성을 높이겠다”고 말했다.
