서울의 가을을 예술의 향기로 물들이는 공연예술 축제 ‘2025 서울어텀페스타(Seoul Autumn Festa)’가 11월 30일 성황리에 막을 내렸다. ‘서울어텀페스타’는 서울문화재단(대표이사 송형종)과 서울시가 공동으로 추진한 축제로, 국내외 관람객에게 서울 공연예술의 다채로운 지형을 소개하기 위해 출범한 새로운 예술 플랫폼이다.
원년을 맞은 올해 축제는 10월 4일 개막 이후 11월 12일까지 공식 일정을 진행하였고, 이어 11월 13일부터 30일까지 확장 프로그램을 이어가며 서울 전역을 거대한 문화 무대로 변화시켰다. 총 9,549명의 예술가가 참여한 116개의 공연과 축제가 도심 곳곳에서 펼쳐져, 약 56만 명의 시민이 발걸음을 옮겨 공연 현장을 채웠다.
12월 1일 서울문화재단 대학로 센터에서는 원년 기획의 성과를 공유하고 내년 운영 방향을 모색하는 ‘2025 서울어텀페스타 관계자 네트워킹 행사’가 열렸다. 이 자리에서는 서울어텀페스타 출범 초기부터 민관 협력 기반을 함께 일군 류재준 예술감독(서울국제음악제), 강선숙 이사장(한국여성연극협회), 그리고 (사)세계판소리협회와 채수정소리단을 이끌고 있는 채수정 이사장 등 28명에게 감사패가 수여되었다. 또한 서울시의회·문화체육관광위원회 소속 아이수루 부위원장과 김규남, 김형재 의원에게는 축제를 향한 지속적 관심과 지원에 대한 공로패가 전달되었다.

채수정 이사장은 지난 10월 8일과 9일 한가위 연휴 기간에 남산골한옥마을과 서울남산국악당 야외무대에서 ‘제3회 월드판소리페스티벌’을 성황리에 개최하였다. 가야금병창과 소리극, 한가위 특별무대에 이어 미국·일본·말레이시아·인도·중국·폴란드·모로코 등 12개국 출신 외국인과 국내 시민 수강생이 함께 ‘춘향가’, ‘수궁가’, 단가 ‘사철가’를 합창하여 국경을 넘는 판소리의 힘을 증명했다.
특히 축제의 대미를 장식한 클로징 퍼포먼스 ‘LET’S 강강술래 GO! GO! GO!’는 소리꾼과 관객이 손을 맞잡고 전통놀이 강강술래를 함께 펼쳐 큰 호응을 얻었다. 아이들, 외국인 방문객, 일반 시민이 한자리에 어우러진 감동의 순간이었다.
올해 월드판소리페스티벌에서는 공연 감상뿐 아니라 1:1 판소리 수업, 가야금병창 워크숍 등 한국 전통문화를 깊이 경험하는 다양한 프로그램이 마련되었고, 많은 외국인 관람객에게 판소리와 국악의 본질을 직접 전달하며 세계화의 실질적 거점을 마련했다.
한편, 축제를 주최·주관한 (사)세계판소리협회는 원로 국악인의 공로를 기리는 뜻깊은 시상을 진행했다. 진도의 명창 신영희(84세) 선생과 여성 국극의 산증인이며 드라마 정년이의 실존 인물인 조영숙(92세) 선생에게 각각 원로 국악인 공로상이 수여되었다.
서울어텀페스타는 이러한 원년의 성과를 바탕으로 내년에는 2026년 9월 21일부터 11월 29일까지 총 70일간 이어질 예정이다. 9월 19일과 20일 여의도 한강공원에서 열릴 대규모 개막 행사를 통해 가을철 서울을 대표하는 순수 공연예술 축제로 자리매김한다는 계획을 밝혔다.
지난 7월 21일 출범한 서울어텀페스타 추진위원회는 다양한 예술가 단체와 서울시 그리고 관계 기관이 함께 구성한 협력 기구로 서울 공연예술을 하나의 흐름으로 엮는 새로운 문화 플랫폼을 목표로 하고 있다. 송형종 서울문화재단 대표이사와 최태지 전 국립발레단 단장이 공동 추진위원장을 맡았으며, 21명의 기획위원과 45명의 자문위원, 10명의 홍보위원으로 구성되어 운영되고 있다.
자문위원으로 활동 중인 채수정 (사)세계판소리협회 이사장은 국가무형문화재 제5호 판소리 ‘흥보가’ 이수자로 한국예술종합학교 전통예술원 교수이다. 그는 국내외에서 판소리의 깊은 정신과 미학을 알리는 데 힘써 왔다.

채수정 명창은 2024년 11월 12일 프랑스 파리 한국문화원에서 열린 ‘흥보 이야기 강연-공연(Conférence-spectacle : Le dit de Heungbo)’을 통해 판소리 흥보가의 프랑스어 번역본 출간을 기념하는 무대를 선보여 현지 언론의 관심을 모았다. 번역가이자 연출자인 에르베 페조디에(Hervé Péjaudier) 가 한국어 원본과 프랑스어 번역본을 소개한 뒤, 채수정 명창은 흥보가의 주요 대목을 전하며 큰 박수를 받았다.
이어 그는 11월 18일과 19일 영국 런던에서 열린 한국 문화제 연결 캠페인으로 채수정 소리단과 함께 판소리 워크숍 및 공연을 이어갔다. 특히 18일, 옥스퍼드 대학 홀리웰 뮤직룸(Holywell Music Room)에서의 공연은 의미가 남달랐다. 헨델과 옥스퍼드 필하모니 소사이어티 등이 무대에 올랐던 유서 깊은 유럽 최초의 콘서트홀에서 한국 전통 판소리가 울려 퍼진 것은 이번이 처음이었다.
옥스퍼드 공연은 국립중앙도서관 해외 한국자료실 ‘윈도우 온 코리아(Window on Korea)’ 문화행사의 지원사업으로, 옥스퍼드 대학 아시아·중동학부의 조지은 교수가 주최하고 주영한국문화원(선승혜 원장)이 후원하였다. 이 행사를 통해 영국의 학자·학생·음악가들은 한국 고전문학과 음악의 깊은 해학과 사유의 세계를 직접 체감하는 뜻깊은 순간을 맞았다.

Awakening the World with the Sound of Korea - Master Singer Chae Su-jeong's Sori Journey

The "2025 Seoul Autumn Festa," a performing arts festival that immerses Seoul in the fragrance of art during autumn, successfully concluded on November 30th. Jointly organized by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (CEO Song Hyeong-jong) and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, "Seoul Autumn Festa" is a new arts platform launched to introduce the diverse landscape of Seoul's performing arts scene to domestic and international audiences.
This year's festival, marking its inaugural year, officially opened on October 4th and ran until November 12th. The expanded program continued from November 13th to 30th, transforming the entire city of Seoul into a grand cultural stage. A total of 9,549 artists participated in 116 performances and festivals across the city, attracting approximately 560,000 citizens.
On December 1st, the "2025 Seoul Autumn Festa Networking Event" was held at the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture's Daehakro Center to share the achievements of the inaugural project and explore the direction of operations for the next year. Chairwoman Chae Soo-jung successfully hosted the "3rd World Pansori Festival" at Namsangol Hanok Village and the outdoor stage of the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang during the Chuseok holiday on October 8th and 9th. Following gayageum byeongchang, sori-geuk, and a special Chuseok performance, international participants from 12 countries, including the United States, Japan, Malaysia, India, China, Poland, and Morocco, along with Korean students, joined forces to sing "Chunhyangga," "Sugungga," and the short song "Sacheolga," demonstrating the transcending power of pansori.
The closing performance, "LET'S Ganggangsullae GO! GO! GO!", which capped the festival, garnered a rousing response from the audience, who joined hands in the traditional Ganggangsullae dance. It was a moving moment, bringing together children, foreign visitors, and the general public.
This year's World Pansori Festival offered diverse programs, including one-on-one pansori lessons and gayageum byeongchang workshops, offering a deeper experience of Korean traditional culture. It also provided a direct introduction to the essence of pansori and gugak to many international visitors, establishing a practical foundation for globalization.
Meanwhile, the World Pansori Association, which hosted and organized the festival, held a meaningful awards ceremony honoring the contributions of senior gugak musicians. The Senior Gugak Merit Award was presented to Shin Young-hee (84), a master singer from Jindo, and Cho Young-sook (92), a living witness to women's gugak and the real-life subject of the drama Jeongnyeon-i.
Building on these successes, the Seoul Autumn Festa will run for a total of 70 days from September 21 to November 29, 2026. The festival announced plans to establish itself as Seoul's representative pure performing arts festival of the fall season, with a large-scale opening ceremony to be held at Yeouido Hangang Park on September 19th and 20th.
The Seoul Autumn Festa Promotion Committee, launched on July 21st, is a collaborative organization comprised of various artist groups, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and related organizations. It aims to create a new cultural platform that connects Seoul's performing arts into a unified flow. Chae Soo-jung, chairwoman of the World Pansori Association and a member of the advisory committee, is a holder of the pansori "Heungboga," designated National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 5, and a professor at the Korea National University of Arts' School of Traditional Arts. She has dedicated herself to promoting the profound spirit and aesthetics of pansori both domestically and internationally.

Master singer Chae Su-jeong garnered attention from the local media with her performance commemorating the publication of the French translation of the pansori Heungboga at the "Conférence-spectacle: Le dit de Heungbo" (Heungbo Story Lecture-Performance) held at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris, France, on November 12, 2024. After translator and director Hervé Péjaudier introduced the original Korean and French translations, master singer Chae Su-jeong delivered key passages from Heungboga, drawing thunderous applause.
She then continued her pansori workshop and performance with the Chae Su-jeong Sori Troupe as part of a campaign linking the Korean Cultural Festival in London, England, on November 18th and 19th.
