겨울바람이 매섭게 불던 지난 11월, 육군 제1보병사단 독수리봉사단이 파주시 보훈대상자 가정을 찾아 동파 방지 작업에 나섰다.
김명식 주임원사가 이끄는 봉사단 7명은 이른 아침부터 낡은 주택가 골목에 모여 작업 계획을 점검했다.
첫 방문지는 40년 가까이 된 구옥에 거주하는 최 모 어르신 댁이었다.
보일러실 문을 열자 찬 기운이 몰려왔다.
노후된 배관과 기능을 상실한 단열재가 눈에 들어왔다.
장병들은 즉시 작업에 착수했다.
동파 위험이 높은 수도관을 새로 매설하기 위해 땅을 파고, 틈새마다 단열 패널을 꼼꼼히 설치했다.

봉사단은 "국가유공자 어르신들의 겨울이 조금이라도 따뜻해졌으면 좋겠다"며 "앞으로도 필요한 곳이면 어디든 찾아가 도움을 드릴 계획"이라고 밝혔다.
박용주 경기북부보훈지청장은 "국가유공자 어르신들의 생활 여건 개선을 위해 꾸준히 봉사해 온 독수리봉사단에 감사드린다"며 "보훈가구의 주거복지 향상을 위한 협력 지원을 이어나가겠다"고 말했다.
작업을 마치고 돌아서는 장병들의 얼굴에는 작은 보람이 서려 있었다.
