충남 당진시가 석문국가산업단지 내 대규모 AI데이터센터 유치에 성공하며, 지역 경제구조 전환과 산업 고도화의 새로운 국면을 맞고 있다.
당진시는 4일 충남도청에서 오성환 당진시장, 김태흠 충남도지사, ㈜지엔씨에너지 안병철 대표, ㈜디씨코리아 정영훈 대표 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘AI데이터센터 투자협약(MOU)’을 체결했다.
이번 협약에 따라 양사는 총 2조 원을 들여 지엔씨에너지 소유 부지에 160MW급 데이터센터를 건립할 예정이다.
이번 프로젝트는 기존 제조 중심의 산업지형을 디지털 기반 산업으로 재편하는 중요한 계기가 될 것으로 분석된다.
칠산해안에 자리한 석문국가산단은 접근성이 뛰어나고, 안정적인 전력·냉각 인프라를 갖춘 점이 데이터센터 입지 조건으로 높은 평가를 받았다. 당진시는 이 같은 입지 경쟁력을 바탕으로 IT·AI 융복합 기업 유치 가능성도 커졌다.
AI데이터센터는 가동 이후 직접 고용 200명을 포함해, 설비 유지보수·전력기기·냉각시스템 등 연관 산업에서 파생되는 간접 일자리 수요도 상당할 것으로 예상된다.
이에 따라 지역 내 생산과 소비가 함께 증가하며, 부동산·서비스업 등 3차 산업 전반에 긍정적 파급효과를 미칠 전망이다.
또한 협약에는 지역인재 우선 채용, 지역 기업 제품 및 자재의 우선 활용 방안이 반영돼 있어, 당진형 상생 경제 모델 구현에도 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
당진시는 충남도와의 협력 체계를 통해 인허가 및 인프라 확충 지원을 병행, 투자가 차질 없이 진행되도록 행정 역량을 집중할 계획이다.
오성환 시장은 “AI데이터센터 건립은 지역 경제에 새로운 성장 동력을 불어넣는 출발점”이라며 “당진을 충남 서북부의 디지털 혁신 거점 도시로 육성하겠다”고 밝혔다.
