【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈)이 방폐장 주변지역 주민과 함께 어려운 이웃을 위한 김장 나눔 활동을 진행했다. 공단은 지난 11월부터 동경주 지역 3개 읍·면 주민들과 연계해 ‘사랑의 김장나눔’ 행사를 추진했다고 5일 밝혔다.

공단은 방폐장 주변에서 생산된 배추 1만 5,300포기를 직접 구매해 절임 작업을 진행했으며, 완성된 김장은 장애인복지시설, 노인돌봄센터, 아동보호시설 등 45개 복지기관에 전달됐다.
이 과정에서 공단 청정누리봉사단은 지난달 28일 양남면 행사와 이달 4일 문무대왕면 자비원 행사에 참여해 김장 담그기와 배달 활동에 동참했다.
특히 김장 배추 절임에는 동경주 지역 전통 방식인 심층 해수 공법이 활용됐으며, 절임 및 준비 과정에 지역 주민 300여 명이 고용돼 일자리 창출에도 기여했다. 김장에 사용된 고춧가루와 마늘 등 주요 재료 역시 지역 로컬푸드로 마련돼 지역 경제 활성화에 의미를 더했다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “이번 김장 나눔은 방폐물의 안전한 관리뿐만 아니라 지역사회 경제와 복지에 기여하는 공공기관의 역할을 실천하는 사업”이라며 “앞으로도 지역 주민과 상생하는 사회적 가치 실현에 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.

KORMA (Chairman Cho Sung-don) participated in a kimjang sharing event with residents of areas surrounding a radioactive waste storage facility to help those in need. The agency directly purchased 15,300 heads of cabbage grown near the facility and pickled them. The finished kimjang was distributed to 45 welfare facilities, including facilities for the disabled, senior care centers, and childcare facilities.
During this process, the KORMA's Clean Nuri Volunteer Group participated in the kimjang-making and delivery activities at the Yangnam-myeon event on the 28th of last month and the Munmu Daewang-myeon Jabiwon event on the 4th of this month.
In particular, the deep-sea method, a traditional method in the Donggyeongju region, was utilized for pickling kimchi cabbage. The pickling and preparation process employed approximately 300 local residents, contributing to job creation. Key ingredients used in kimchi, such as red pepper powder and garlic, were also sourced locally, further contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency Chairman Cho Sung-don stated, "This kimchi sharing project demonstrates our role as a public institution, not only in the safe management of radioactive waste but also in contributing to the local economy and welfare. We will continue to strive to realize social value by coexisting with local residents."
