시는 11일 시청 중회의실에서 ‘포항 외국교육기관 설립을 위한 타당성 분석 및 실행계획 수립 연구용역’ 착수보고회를 개최했다.
이날 회의에는 포항시 관련 부서, 대구경북경제자유구역청, 용역 수행기관인 ㈜포항융합티앤아이 관계자들이 참석해 과업 추진계획과 향후 일정 등을 공유했다. 참석자들은 외국교육기관 설립을 위한 세부 검토 사항을 중심으로 심층 토론을 이어가며 향후 추진 방향을 논의했다.
이번 연구용역은 향후 국비 확보를 위한 타당성 조사, 지방재정투자심사에 대비한 기초자료 구축을 목표로 한다. 포항시는 지역 여건 분석, 교육 수요 진단, 법·제도적 과제 검토 등을 통해 사업 추진 초기 단계에서 필요한 기반을 체계적으로 마련할 계획이다.
포항융합기술산업지구(펜타시티)에 조성될 국제학교는 초·중·고 통합 기숙형 외국교육기관으로, 외국인 70%, 내국인 30% 비율을 포함한 약 1,500명 규모로 설립될 예정이다.
시는 국제학교 설립이 지역 정주 여건 개선과 글로벌 경쟁력 확보에 직결되는 핵심 전략 과제라고 판단하고 있다. 이에 따라 이번 연구용역을 통해 교육, 경제, 문화, 정주환경 등 지역 전반에 미칠 파급효과를 분석하고, 지역사회와의 상생 방안도 함께 도출할 방침이다.
한편, 지난 11월 포항융합기술산업지구 내 국제학교 예정 부지를 방문한 영국 CCB 측은 최근 서신을 통해 포항 분교 개교에 대한 변함없는 신뢰를 표하며 강한 추진 의지를 재확인했다. 이에 따라 포항시는 국제학교 설립 사업이 한층 탄력을 받을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
김정표 포항시 일자리경제국장은 “국제학교 설립은 지역의 미래를 좌우할 중대한 사업”이라며 “신속한 행정 절차와 치밀한 계획 수립을 통해 세계적 수준의 교육기관이 안정적으로 자리잡을 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

This research service aims to establish baseline data for a feasibility study to secure future national funding and for local government investment reviews. Pohang City plans to systematically establish the necessary foundation in the initial stages of the project through analysis of local conditions, assessment of educational needs, and review of legal and institutional challenges.
The international school, to be built in the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex (Penta City), will be a boarding-type international educational institution with integrated elementary, middle, and high school programs. It is expected to accommodate approximately 1,500 students, with 70% international and 30% domestic students.
The city believes that establishing an international school is a key strategic initiative directly related to improving local living conditions and securing global competitiveness. Accordingly, this research project will analyze the potential ripple effects on the entire region, encompassing education, the economy, culture, and the residential environment, and will also identify ways to foster mutual growth with the local community.
Meanwhile, the UK CCB, which visited the proposed site for the international school in the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex last November, recently sent a letter expressing its continued confidence in the opening of the Pohang branch and reaffirming its strong commitment to pursuing this initiative. Pohang City anticipates that this will further accelerate the international school project.
Kim Jeong-pyo, Director of Pohang City's Employment and Economic Affairs Bureau, said, "The establishment of an international school is a critical undertaking that will determine the future of the region.
