충남 당진시가 포항시, 광양시와 손잡고 국가 철강산업의 위기 극복을 위한 정부의 신속하고 실질적인 대응을 촉구했다.
12일 서울 국회 소통관에서 열린 ‘당진·포항·광양 철강도시 공동기자회견’에서 세 도시는 미국의 50% 고율 철강 관세 재협상과 ‘K-스틸법’ 시행령 마련 등 범정부 차원의 종합대책 수립을 요청했다.
이날 기자회견에는 세 도시의 시장과 지역 국회의원, 상공회의소 회장단 등 주요 인사들이 함께했다.
최근 글로벌 경기 침체와 미국의 고율 관세 부과가 겹치며 국내 철강산업이 전례 없는 위기에 빠졌다. 당진·포항·광양 3개 도시는 국내 조강 생산의 90% 이상을 차지하고 있지만, 수출 급감으로 지역경제까지 큰 충격을 받고 있다.

세 도시는 이날 기자회견을 통해 △대미 철강 관세 재협상 및 대응전략 마련 △K-스틸법 시행령에 지역 현장 의견 반영 △산업위기지역 지정 확대 등 3대 요구사항을 정부와 국회에 공식 전달했다.
특히 ‘K-스틸법’ 하위법령에 기업의 전력비 부담 완화와 핵심 인프라 지원 등 산업계가 체감할 수 있는 조치가 반영돼야 한다는 점을 강조했다.
오 시장은 “철강산업의 위기는 단순히 철강기업만의 문제가 아니라 국가 제조업 전반의 구조적 위기”라며 “정부가 대외협상력을 발휘해 미국과의 관세 재협상에 나서고, 법안 시행 과정에서도 현장의 목소리가 반영돼야 한다”고 촉구했다.
신현덕 당진상공회의소 회장 역시 “당진이 유일하게 산업위기 선제대응지역으로 지정되지 못한 현실은 지역 기업인들에게 큰 상실감을 안겼다”며 “즉각적인 지정과 함께 기업 회생을 위한 금융·재정 지원이 절실하다”고 호소했다.
당진시는 이번 공동기자회견을 계기로 포항·광양과의 협력체계를 강화하고, 철강산업 경쟁력 회복과 지역경제 안정화를 위한 후속 공조를 이어간다는 방침이다.
