영천고는 2026년 3월 개교를 앞두고 남녀공학 체제로 운영된다. 신입생은 군인자녀 66명과 영천시·경상북도 지역 학생 72명 등 모두 138명 규모로 구성된다. 이 가운데 군인자녀는 혼성 3학급으로 편성될 예정이며, 지역 학생 72명의 합격자는 오는 26일 공개된다.
영천고는 국방부와의 협약에 따라 전국에서 유일하게 군인자녀를 대상으로 하는 자율형 공립고로 문을 연다. 이에 따라 경상권뿐 아니라 수도권, 강원, 충청, 전라 등 전국 각지에서 지원자가 몰리며 경북교육의 경쟁력이 다시 한번 확인됐다.
앞서 영천고는 지난 8일부터 12일까지 군인자녀를 대상으로 전국 단위 원서 접수를 진행했다. 또한, 네 차례의 입학설명회를 열고 전국 중학교를 직접 찾아가 맞춤형 진학 상담을 실시하는 등 적극적인 홍보 활동을 펼쳤다. 이러한 노력 덕분에, 경북을 제외한 전국에서 남학생 35명, 여학생 31명이 최종 합격자로 선발됐다.
이번 신입생 선발 성과는 군인자녀 교육환경 개선과 지역 인재 양성을 목표로 중앙정부, 지자체, 교육청, 학교가 함께 긴밀히 협력한 결과로 분석된다. 지난 3월 교육부와 국방부의 협약 체결을 시작으로, 영천시와 영천교육지원청, 육군3사관학교, 대학, 지역 기관이 참여하는 협의체가 꾸려져 교육과정과 운영 기반을 다졌다.
이어 영천시는 교육발전특구로 지정됐고, 다양한 기관과의 협력을 거쳐 지난해 10월 전국 유일의 군인자녀 모집형 자율형 공립고로 최종 선정됐다.
경북교육청은 공교육 중심의 교육체계 강화를 위해 약 270억 원을 들여 전교생이 기숙사 생활을 할 수 있도록 기숙사를 신축·리모델링 중이다. 방과후와 주말 프로그램, 방학 집중 캠프 등 특색 있는 교육과정 운영을 위한 행정·재정적 지원도 지속할 방침이다.
이와 함께 군인자녀의 특성을 고려해 사관학교 진학을 돕는 사관스쿨, 국제교류 프로그램, 리더십 아카데미, 예체능 활동, 과학중점교 기반의 교과 융합 프로젝트 등 다양한 교육활동도 운영할 계획이다.
영천고는 2년여의 공사를 마무리하면서 올해 연말 완공 예정인 최신 본관 건물 입주를 앞두고 있어, 개교 준비에도 속도를 내고 있다.
임종식 경북교육감은 “전국적인 지원 열기는 그동안 경북교육이 추진해 온 공교육 혁신과 미래형 학교 모델이 현장에서 공감을 얻고 있다는 것을 보여주는 증거”라며, “군인자녀를 포함한 모든 학생이 지역에서도 수준 높은 교육을 받을 수 있도록 꾸준히 지원하겠다”고 말했다.

Following this, Yeongcheon City was designated as a Special Education Development Zone, and after collaboration with various organizations, in October of last year, Yeongcheon High School was selected as the nation's only autonomous public high school specifically designed for military children.
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education is currently investing approximately 27 billion won to build and remodel dormitories to accommodate all students, strengthening its public education-centered education system. It also plans to continue providing administrative and financial support for unique educational programs, including after-school and weekend programs and intensive summer camps.
Furthermore, the Office plans to operate diverse educational programs, including a military academy designed to support the unique needs of military children, an international exchange program, a leadership academy, arts and physical education activities, and interdisciplinary projects based on a science-focused school.
Yeongcheon High School is accelerating preparations for its opening, with construction completed over two years ago and move-in to its newest main building, scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
