19일 최종 고시… 보원사지 일원 불교문화 거점으로 집중 육성
명종대왕 태실 세계유산 등재 추진 등 ‘국가유산 위상 제고’ 행정력 집중
충남 서산시의 대표적 문화유산인 ‘서산 보원사지 오층석탑’이 마침내 대한민국 국보로 이름을 올렸다. 서산시는 이번 국보 승격을 기점으로 관내 국가유산에 대한 보존과 계승을 넘어, 세계적 문화유산 도시로 거듭나겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.
서산시는 19일, 보원사지 오층석탑이 문화재청으로부터 국보로 최종 지정·고시됐다고 발표했다. 이번 승격은 오층석탑의 뛰어난 조형미와 학술적 가치, 보존 상태 등이 종합적으로 인정받은 결과다.
시는 국보 지정을 계기로 보원사지의 역사적 가치를 복원하는 데 주력한다. 우선 박물관 기능을 갖춘 ‘서산 보원사지 방문자센터’ 건립을 추진해 관광객과 학계의 접근성을 높일 계획이다.
이미 지난 11월 보원사 장경각 및 관리동 건립 사업이 착공에 들어갔으며, 최근 발굴 조사에서는 고려시대 최대 규모로 추정되는 승방지가 발견되는 등 보원사지의 실체를 밝히는 성과가 이어지고 있어 불교문화 거점 조성 사업에 탄력이 붙을 전망이다.
보원사지뿐만 아니라 서산 전역의 문화유산들이 잇따라 가치를 인정받고 있다.
개심사는 소장 중인 ‘영산회상도 및 팔상도’, ‘지장보살도 및 시왕도’가 지난 10월 충남도 유형문화유산으로 지정됐고, 부석사 목조여래좌상이 충남도 유형문화유산 지정을 앞두고 예고된 상태다.
서산시는 이에 만족하지 않고 명종대왕 태실의 세계유산 등재와 개심사 목조아미타여래좌상의 국보 승격을 차기 중점 과제로 선정해 행정력을 집중할 방침이다.
서산시는 올해 명종대왕 태실 보수, 동문동 성당 및 부석사 수리 등을 성공적으로 마쳤다. 특히 지난 7월 집중호우로 피해를 입은 문화유산에 대해서도 신속한 복구 작업을 진행 중이다.
국보인 서산 용현리 마애여래 삼존상 진입로의 응급 복구는 완료됐으며, 개심사·문수사 등 주요 전통 사찰의 복구 사업도 단계적으로 추진 중이다.
이완섭 서산시장은 “오랜 시간 공들여온 문화유산 시책들이 연구와 보존, 활용 모든 단계에서 값진 결실을 맺고 있다”며 “앞으로도 서산의 소중한 문화유산을 잘 보존해 시민의 자긍심을 높이고, 세계인이 찾는 역사·문화 도시로서의 위상을 굳건히 하겠다”고 말했다.
