브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 쿠팡이 26일 개인정보 유출 사건과 관련 “독자적으로 진행한 자체 조사가 아니라 정부 지시에 따라 수주간 긴밀히 협력하며 진행한 조사였다”고 밝혔다.
특히 정치권에서 '탐정놀이 하느냐'는 비판까지 나오자, 불필요한 오해와 불안 확산을 막기 위해 정부와의 공조 과정까지 구체적으로 공개했다.
쿠팡은 이날 입장문을 통해 “이번 데이터 유출 사건으로 국민 여러분께 큰 우려를 끼친 점을 무겁게 받아들이고 있다”며 “정부의 지시 아래 진행된 조사 경과를 명확히 설명하고자 한다”고 밝혔다.
쿠팡에 따르면 지난 12월 1일 정부와 만나 전폭적인 협력을 약속했으며, 2일에는 유출 사고와 관련한 공식 공문을 정부로부터 접수했다. 이후 수주간 정부와 거의 매일 협력하며 유출자를 추적하고 접촉하는 과정이 이어졌다는 설명이다.
특히 정부 지시에 따라 유출자로부터 자백을 확보하고, 유출에 사용된 기기들을 회수한 것이며 관련 진술서와 자료를 즉시 정부에 제출해 왔다고 강조했다.
쿠팡은 지난 9일 정부의 제안으로 유출자와의 직접 접촉을 진행했으며, 소통 방식과 표현 하나하나까지 정부와 협의하며 신중히 대응했다고 설명했다.
14일 유출자와 첫 대면 이후 해당 사실을 정부에 보고했고, 16일에는 데스크톱 하드디스크를 회수해 정부에 전달했다.
이어 18일에는 인근 하천에서 유출자의 맥북 에어 노트북을 추가로 회수해 정부에 인계했으며, 이 과정에서 포렌식 팀을 투입해 증거를 확보하고 문서화했다고 밝혔다. 이후 정부 요청에 따라 모든 진술서에 지문 날인을 추가로 진행했다.
21일에는 정부가 확보된 진술서와 노트북, 하드디스크 등 모든 증거를 경찰에 제출하도록 지시했고, 쿠팡은 포렌식 조사를 위해 관련 기기를 경찰에 제공했다. 23일에는 정부에 조사 경과에 대한 상세 보고를 진행했으며, 25일 고객들에게 조사 진행 상황을 안내했다. 이어 26일 다시 한 차례 정부에 조사 결과를 브리핑했다.
쿠팡은 “정부 기관과 국회, 일부 언론으로부터 ‘사건에 소극적으로 대응했다’는 비판을 받았지만, 수사 기밀을 유지하고 세부 내용을 공개하지 말라는 정부의 요청을 철저히 따랐다”면서 “현재 진행 중인 정부 수사에 전적으로 협조하고 있으며, 추가 피해를 막기 위해 필요한 모든 조치를 계속해 나갈 것”이라고 했다.
Coupang Responds to Controversy Over Independent Investigation: "We Conducted a Collaborative Investigation Following Government Instructions"
Coupang stated on the 26th regarding the personal information leak incident, "This was not an independent investigation conducted independently, but rather a close collaboration conducted for several weeks under government direction."
Faced with criticism from politicians, who questioned whether the company was "playing detective," Coupang disclosed the details of its collaboration with the government to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings and anxiety.
In a statement released that day, Coupang stated, "We take the significant concern this data leak has caused the public very seriously. We would like to clearly explain the progress of the investigation conducted under government direction."
According to Coupang, on December 1st, the company met with the government and pledged full cooperation. On December 2nd, the company received an official letter from the government regarding the leak. The company explained that it continued to cooperate with the government almost daily for several weeks, tracking down and contacting the leaker.
In particular, Coupang emphasized that it secured a confession from the leaker and recovered the devices used in the leak, following government instructions, and immediately submitted related statements and materials to the government.
Coupang explained that it contacted the leaker directly on the 9th at the government's suggestion and that it responded carefully, consulting with the government on every detail of its communication methods and expressions.
After its first meeting with the leaker on the 14th, Coupang reported the incident to the government. On the 16th, it recovered the desktop hard drive and delivered it to the government.
Following this, on the 18th, it additionally recovered the leaker's MacBook Air laptop from a nearby stream and handed it over to the government. During this process, it announced that a forensic team was deployed to secure and document evidence. At the government's request, Coupang also fingerprinted all statements.
On the 21st, the government instructed the police to submit all evidence, including the statements, laptops, and hard drives, to the police. Coupang provided the relevant devices to the police for forensic examination. On the 23rd, it provided a detailed report on the investigation's progress to the government, and on the 25th, it updated customers on the investigation's progress. On the 26th, Coupang briefed the government again on the results of its investigation.
Coupang stated, "Although we have been criticized by government agencies, the National Assembly, and some media outlets for our 'passive response to the incident,' we have strictly complied with the government's request to maintain confidentiality of the investigation and not disclose details." The company added, "We are fully cooperating with the ongoing government investigation and will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent further damage."
