브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 장인화 포스코그룹 회장이 2일 신년사를 통해 액화천연가스(LNG) 등 에너지 사업과 인공지능(AI), 안전을 그룹의 미래 경쟁력으로 제시하며 본격적인 체질 전환에 나서겠다고 밝혔다.
장 회장은 이날 2026년 병오년을 맞아 포항 스페이스워크에서 열린 시무식에서 “글로벌 보호주의와 지정학적 리스크 확대로 경영 환경이 그 어느 때보다 엄혹하다”며 “에너지와 AI를 축으로 새로운 성장 동력을 확보해 포스코그룹의 제2, 제3의 전성기를 열어가야 한다”고 강조했다. 이후 포항제철소 2후판공장과 2제강공장을 찾아 임직원들을 격려하며 현장 중심의 새해 첫 일정을 시작했다.
장 회장은 “글로벌 밸류체인이 분절되면서 원료 조달부터 제품 판매까지 전 과정이 도전에 직면해 있다”면서도 “우리만의 강점을 살려 새로운 법칙을 만들어 간다면 위기를 기회로 바꿀 수 있다”고 말했다.
특히 안전을 그룹 경영의 최우선 가치로 강조했다. 그는 “근로자가 작업장 안전 관리의 주체가 되는 문화를 정착시켜 제조·건설 현장 전반에 K-세이프티 모범 사례를 확산해야 한다”며 “안전이 담보되지 않으면 어떤 성과도 의미가 없는 만큼, 모든 작업장의 위험 요인을 철저히 분석·제거해 무재해를 실현해야 한다”고 밝혔다.
인공지능 전환(AX)에 대한 의지도 분명히 했다. 장 회장은 “산업 패러다임 전환에 적기에 대응해야 한다”며 “제조 현장에서는 지능형 공장을 확산해 인당 생산성을 높이고, 고위험 수작업 공정에는 로봇 기반 무인화 기술을 적용해 안전하고 쾌적한 근무 환경을 조성해야 한다”고 말했다. 이어 “사무 영역에서도 AI를 활용해 더 깊이 있는 통찰을 바탕으로 시장 변화에 민첩하게 대응하고, 창의적 성과를 창출할 수 있도록 업무 환경을 혁신해야 한다”며 임직원의 AI 활용 역량 제고를 주문했다.
에너지 사업을 차기 성장축으로 육성하겠다는 구상도 밝혔다. 장 회장은 “AI 확산과 전동화로 전력 수요가 급증하면서 각국이 산업 안보 차원에서 친환경 에너지 확보에 총력을 기울이고 있다”며 “탄소 배출이 적고 안정적인 공급이 가능한 LNG는 전략적 가치가 더욱 부각되고 있다”고 말했다.
그는 “미국 알래스카 LNG 프로젝트를 북극권 가스 자산 확장의 계기로 삼아 에너지 사업 경쟁력을 강화하겠다”며 “장기적으로는 재생에너지 전환 흐름에 대응해 해상풍력, 해외 태양광, 에너지저장장치(ESS) 사업을 추진하고, 선도 기업과의 협력을 통해 역량을 내재화해 자체 사업화로 이어가야 한다”고 강조했다.
아울러 “소재 분야에서 축적한 기술과 역량을 바탕으로 미래 산업을 이끌 새로운 신사업 도메인을 발굴해야 한다”며 “불확실성이 상수가 된 경영 환경 속에서도 흔들리지 않는 사업 포트폴리오를 구축하는 데 그룹의 역량을 집중하자”고 당부했다.
