우리나라는 인구 감소로 인해 '국가 소멸 위기'라는 지적을 받아왔다. 통계청 인구증감 자료에 따르면, 대한민국의 합계 출산율은 지난 2023년 0.72명, 지난 2024년에는 0.75명이다. 인구 감소 현상이 여전하다.
영국의 인구학자 콜먼 교수는 대한민국이 현재의 인구감소 문제를 해결하지 못할 경우, 전 세계에서 가장 먼저 소멸 국가가 될 위험이 있다고 경고한 바 있다. 그는 지난 2006년 영국의 옥스퍼드대학교 교수 시절에 “대한민국이 2750년에 인구가 완전히 사라질 수 있다”고 예측했었다. 그는 대한민국의 심각한 저출산 위기가 인구 감소의 주요 원인이며, 이에 대한 해법 마련이 시급하다고 강조했다.

최근 이재명 대통령의 발언으로 인해, 종교의 해산 문제, 재단법인-사단법인들도 반사회적 지탄받는 행위를 하면 해산시켜야 한다는 게 사회적 이슈가 됐다.
이재명 대통령은 지난 2025년 12월 9일 서울 용산 대통령실 청사에서 열린 국무회의에서 발언에서, 종교 해산과 관련 “헌법과 법률을 위반하는 지탄받을 행위를 하면 해산시켜야 한다”고 강조했다. 그후 이 대통령은 “재단법인이든 개인이든, 개인도 범죄를 저지르고 반사회적 행위를 하면 제재가 있는데 재단, 사단법인도 반사회적 지탄받는 행위를 하면 해산시켜야 한다”고 덧붙였다. 여기에서, 이재명 대통령은 특정종교, 즉 통일교를 지목하지는 않았다. 반사회적 지탄받는 행위를 하면 종교 단체든, 재단법인이든, 사단법인이든 해산의 대상이 될 수 있다는 원론(原論) 수준의 발언이었다.
