많은 제국이 스쳐 간 아나톨리아 반도에는 오랜 시간을 견뎌온 이름 없는 돌들이 남아 있다. 히타이트와 프리기아, 로마와 비잔틴, 오스만에 이르기까지 수많은 제국의 바람 속에서 인내의 삶을 지켜온 것처럼 돌은 기념비가 되지 않은 채 침묵의 존재로 남아왔다. 이곳의 돌은 승리를 기록하지 않았으며 신의 계시를 새기지도 않았다. 다만 떠나온 이들의 손길과 체념의 무게를 안고 말없이 그 자리에 머물러 있었다. ‘귈텐 카라뵈첵’의 노래 ‘소원을 비는 돌(Dilek Taşı)’이 서 있는 자리 또한, 아나톨리아 땅이다.
튀르키예 대중음악사에서 민중의 자화상을 노래해 온 여가수 ‘귈텐 카라뵈첵’은 튀르키예 현대사의 모순과 감정을 담은 문화적 현상인 아라베스크가 한 시대의 감정 언어로 굳어가던 흐름을 대표하는 목소리다. 1950년대 이후 튀르키예 사회는 급격한 도시화와 내부 이주를 겪으며 농촌에서 대도시로 밀려든 이들은 새로운 시민이 되지 못한 채 주변부에 머물렀다. 아라베스크는 바로 그 경계 상태에 놓인 이들의 음악이었다. 이 장르는 저항의 노래도 혁명의 음악도 아니었다. 선택지가 사라진 이후의 삶과 말해도 달라지지 않는 현실을 견디는 감정이 반복과 체념의 구조로 축적된 음악이었다.
