브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌 보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
특정 대상을 통해 영감 받기 보다는, 아주 사소한 세상의 일상적인 순간에서부터 남아 있는 감각에 반응하는 편이다. 아주 길게 자라 바닥에 물을 뚝 떨구는 고드름이나, 주변이 문득 이유 없이 비어 있는 듯한 상태가 그것이다. 어떤 결핍이라기보다는 이곳에 무언가 있었다고 뒤늦게 알아차리게 되는 흔적에 가깝다.

-왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
특별한 소명이라기보다는, 자연스러운 일이었다. 나의 삶과 주변의 빈 곳들을 자세히 들여다보고자 하는 마음을 가진 채 살았고, 무시하거나 억누르는 것도 가능했겠지만 계속 들여다보는 쪽을 택했다. 나에게 있어 작업은 표현의 수단이라기보다는, 이 감각과 관계를 유지하는 수단이고 어떤 것을 쫓아 알아내기 위한 방식이다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
가장 힘들었던 때는 이런 묘한 순간들이 아무 의미도 없는 것처럼 느껴질 때이다. 나조차도 이것이 왜 중요한지 논리정연하게 설명할 수 없는데도 계속 이 상태를 따라가야 하는 것이 버겁게 느껴질 때가 있다. 하지만 그 때마다 다시 들여다보기를 선택했고, 그 선택이 반복되면서 작업은 서서히 내 삶과 분리할 수 없는 것이 되었다.
-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
가장 행복했던 순간은 특별한 순간이 아니라, 작업실에 앉아서 몰입하는 순간이다. 무언가를 했다는 느낌보다는 내가 있는 ‘공간’과 ‘작업’과 ‘나 자신’이 하나가 되었다는 느낌이 강하게 들 때 가장 충만하다.

-앞으로의 전시 계획은
앞으로도 감각들을 더 섬세하게 포착하고, 지금 다루고 있는 ‘모서리’라는 공간과 회화적 행위들에 대해서도 더 깊게 탐구 해보고 싶다. 전시는 이러한 탐구의 중간 지점들을 공유하는 방식으로 이어 나가게 될 것 같고, 서서히 찾아나가는 과정을 전시로 함께 보여 드리고 싶다.
영해는 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과를 졸업하고, 현재 홍익대학교 대학원 회화과 석사과정에 재학 중이다. 회화의 물성과 감각적 경계를 탐구하는 작업을 이어오며, 2025년부터 2026년에 걸쳐 홍익대학교 회화과 석사 GPS전에 참여해 신진 작가로서의 행보를 꾸준히 보여왔다. 2026년 4월에는 CICA MUSEUM의 Open Curation Project에 참여할 예정이다. 영해는 동시대 회화의 가능성을 섬세한 시선으로 풀어내는데 주력하고 있다.

[Interview] Artist Younghae: "Delicately Capturing the Sensations of Everyday Life, That Moment"

-Where do you primarily draw inspiration from when creating your work?
Rather than being inspired by specific objects, I tend to respond to the lingering sensations of everyday moments in life. These include long icicles dripping water onto the ground, or the sudden, inexplicable emptiness of the surroundings. Rather than a sense of lack, they're more like traces of something that was there only to belatedly realize.
-Why did you choose to be an artist?
It wasn't a special calling, but rather a natural progression. I lived with a desire to closely examine the voids in my life and the spaces around me. While it would have been possible to ignore or suppress them, I chose to continue to look. For me, work is not a means of expression, but rather a means of maintaining a connection with this sense, a way to pursue and discover something.
-What was the most difficult moment in your career as an artist?
The most difficult times are when these strange moments feel meaningless. Even I can't logically explain why they're important, yet it feels overwhelming to have to keep going. But each time, I chose to look again, and as I repeated that choice, work gradually became inseparable from my life.
-Conversely, what was your happiest moment?
My happiest moment isn't a specific moment, but rather a moment of deep immersion in my studio. I feel most fulfilled when I feel a strong sense of unity between the "space," "my work," and "myself," rather than a sense of having accomplished something.
-Future exhibition plans:
I hope to capture the senses more delicately and delve deeper into the spatial and pictorial practices of the "corner," which I'm currently exploring. The exhibition will continue to share the midpoints of this exploration, and I hope to showcase the gradual process of discovery through the exhibition.
Younghae graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Korea National University of Arts and is currently pursuing a master's degree in painting at Hongik University. Her work explores the materiality and sensory boundaries of painting, and she has consistently demonstrated her journey as an emerging artist by participating in the Hongik University Master's Degree in Painting GPS Exhibition from 2025 to 2026. She plans to participate in the CICA MUSEUM's Open Curation Project in April 2026. Younghae focuses on exploring the possibilities of contemporary painting with a nuanced perspective.
