고양특례시가 경기도 북부지역에서 처음으로 실시간 신호정보 개방사업을 완료했다고 13일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 경기북부경찰청의 총괄 추진 아래 고양시가 신호제어기 운영 정보 제공, 시스템 연계, 기술 검토 등을 지원하는 방식으로 진행됐다.
실시간 신호정보 개방 사업은 지자체와 경찰청이 관리하는 교통신호 정보를 실시간으로 공개해 민간·공공 서비스에서 활용할 수 있도록 하는 사업이다.

개방된 신호정보는 민간 네비게이션을 통해 운전자에게 제공된다.
이번 서비스는 중앙로 덕은교 삼거리부터 대곡역까지 약 8km 구간의 29개 교차로를 대상으로 한다.
해당 구간 내 교차로에 접근하는 운전자는 전방 신호등의 잔여시간과 신호변경 시점 등을 실시간으로 안내받게 된다.
시는 이번 서비스를 통해 신호대기 중인 운전자의 피로도를 줄이고, 교차로 진입 시 급정거로 인한 사고를 예방하는 등 교통안전 증진 효과가 클 것으로 기대하고 있다.
특히 중앙로는 중앙버스전용차로가 운영되는 주요 간선도로로 대형차량 이동이 많은 구간이다.
가속과 감속에 더 많은 거리가 필요한 대형차량의 특성상 실시간 신호정보 제공 효과가 더욱 클 것으로 전망된다.
고양시는 이번 서비스 개시를 계기로 관계기관과의 협력을 강화하고, 향후 단계적으로 신호정보 개방 구간을 확대할 계획이다.
이를 통해 지능형 교통체계(ITS) 고도화와 시민 체감형 스마트 교통서비스를 지속적으로 추진해 나간다는 방침이다.
