북아프리카 지중해 연안에 아프리카의 가장 드넓은 나라 알제리에 내전이 한창이던 1990년대 목숨을 걸고 노래를 부른 젊은 여성 싱어송라이터가 있었다. 수아드 마시(Souad Massi)이다. 당시 그녀는 그릇된 권력에 저항하는 알제리 록 밴드 아타코르(Atakor)에서 활동하며 신변의 위협에 긴 머리를 자르고 남성으로 변장하였지만, 연속되는 살해 위협에 1999년 프랑스 파리로 망명하였다.
