이재명 대통령이 14일(현지시간) 재일 동포들과 만나 "식민지에서 벗어나 해방을 맞이했으나 조국이 둘로 나뉘어 다투는 바람에 많은 분이 또 다시 이곳으로 건너올 수밖에 없었던 아픈 역사도 있었다"고 했다.
이 대통령은 방일 일정 마지막 날인 이날 오후 일본 간사이 나라컨벤션센터에서 열린 재일 동포 오찬 간담회에서 "재일 동포분들이 타지서 언제나 모국을 생각하며 지원을 아끼지 않았던 이야기를 전할 때면 참으로 마음이 숙연해진다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "(나라현이) 고즈넉하고 공주·부여·경주 같은 전통이 살아있는 느낌이라 낯설지 않고 포근하다"며 "안타깝게도 한·일 간 불행한 과거 때문에 수천 년 아름다운 교류 역사가 제대로 기억되지 못하는 측면이 있다"고 했다.
또 "동포 여러분은 88년 올림픽·IMF 외환위기 등 역사적 고비마다 발 벗고 도움 손길을 내밀어 주셨다"며 "변치 않는 그 노고·헌신에 다시 한 번 깊은 존경·감사 말씀을 드린다"고 했다.
이어 "재일 동포 여러분 희생·헌신 덕에 대한민국은 산업·민주화를 동시에 이뤄냈다"며 "한·일 양국 관계 또한 부침이 있기는 하나 조금씩 진전을 이뤄내고 있다"고 했다.
더불어 "모국 방문 시 국적·출신에 의해 불합리한 차별 받지 않도록 문제 소지가 있는 제도들을 발굴 개선하겠다"며 "대한민국이 걱정하는 존재가 되지 않도록 여러분을 잘 챙기고 보살피도록 하겠다"고 덧붙였다.
