[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주 호국사의 ‘괘불도 및 괘불함’이 근대 불화기법과 시대적 특징을 잘 보여주는 문화유산으로 평가받아 지난 8일 경상남도 등록문화유산으로 지정됐다.
진주 호국사 괘불도는 높이 940cm, 폭 630cm의 대형 불화로, 화기 명문을 통해 지난 1932년 호국사 봉안을 목적으로 제작된 사실이 확인된다.
또 함께 등록된 괘불함은 길이 680cm 규모의 전용 보관함으로, 괘불도의 보존과 활용을 위해 제작된 근대기 불교 공예품이다.
이 괘불도는 큰 법회 시 야외에 걸어 사용하는 영산회상도 형식으로, 부처를 중심으로 오존을 간결하게 배치한 영산회상도 형식을 갖추고 있다.
또 전통 안료 중심의 조선 후기 불화와 달리 인공적인 색조와 길상문, 매화문·석류문 등 근대적 문양이 화면 곳곳에 나타난다.
특히 괘불도는 원근법과 음영법 등 사실적 회화기법이 적용돼 전통 불화에서 근대 불화로의 변화 과정을 살필 수 있는 자료로 평가된다.
조규일 진주시장은 “호국사를 찾아 등록증을 전달하며 체계적인 보존·관리를 통해 지역의 역사문화자원으로 활용하겠다”고 말했다.
