[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 대한민국 기계 산업의 심장인 창원특례시가 '글로벌 기후 산업의 심장'으로 거듭나고 있다. 창원시는 지난 16일, 전 세계 1만 3,800여 개 도시가 참여하는 세계 최대 기후 협의체 '글로벌 기후·에너지 시장협약(GCoM)' 평가에서 국내 최고 등급을 획득했다고 밝혔다.
창원시는 제조업 중심 도시라는 한계를 극복하고 일궈낸 성과라는 점에서 국제 사회의 이목이 쏠리고 있다. GCoM은 기후위기 대응력을 평가하는 가장 까다로운 국제 잣대로 통한다.

창원시는 지난해 지자체 탄소중립 우수사례 전국 1위에 이어, 이번 GCoM 최고 등급 획득으로 기후 대응의 '그랜드슬램'을 달성하게 됐다. 공장이 밀집한 창원의 특성상 온실가스 감축은 산업 경쟁력과 직결되는 난제였다. 창원시는 이를 피하지 않고 정면으로 돌파했다.
이번 성과에 대한 시상은 오는 2월 11일 파주에서 열리는 '2026년 이클레이(ICLEI) 한국사무소 정기회의'에서 진행될 예정이다.
