Dongducheon City, Gyeonggi Province, Offers Cremation Incentives to Promote Cremation Culture
Cremation incentives of up to 300,000 won will be provided to residents to ease the financial burden of traveling to cremation sites due to the lack of a local crematorium.
[Break News Dongducheon=Kim Wan-young] Dongducheon City, Gyeonggi Province, announced that starting this year, it will provide a cremation incentive of up to 300,000 won to local residents to ease the financial burden of traveling to cremation sites due to the lack of a local crematorium.
Currently, Dongducheon City lacks a crematorium, forcing residents to use cremation facilities in other regions, resulting in relatively high cremation fees. This is because most crematoriums charge higher fees to residents of other regions.
Eligible for the cremation subsidy are those who have cremated the funeral of a person who has been registered as a resident of Dongducheon City for at least one year prior to the date of death; those who have cremated the funeral of an infant or stillborn fetus of a person registered as a resident of Dongducheon City for at least one year; and those who have legally cremated the body or remains in a city-located grave in accordance with legal procedures.
The subsidy is up to 300,000 won per cremated body or remains, and up to 100,000 won per remains. Applications must be submitted within six months of the cremation date to the administrative welfare center at the deceased's address or the location of the grave.
A Dongducheon City official stated, "We expect this support to provide comfort to citizens in their grief and substantially alleviate their financial burden. By transitioning from traditional burial to cremation, we will contribute to improving funeral culture, preventing land damage, and efficiently utilizing the remains."
