브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조국 조국혁신당 대표는 24일 더불어민주당과의 합당 논의와 관련해 "민주당 내에서 많은 긴장과 논쟁이 발생하고 있다"며 "합당과 관련한 내용은 민주당에서 논의가 다 진행된 뒤에 저희가 답을 해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
조 대표는 이날 국회에서 열린 조국혁신당 긴급 의원총회 도중 기자들과 만나 "조국혁신당으로서는 이 논의가 매우 중요하다"며 "차분하고 진지하게, 질서 있게 논의하고 결정할 것"이라고 말했다.
그는 "오늘 의원총회를 시작으로 당무위원회를 열어 공식적인 절차를 밟아 나갈 것"이라며 "그 과정에서 당원의 의견과 국민의 생각을 폭넓게 수렴해 논의하겠다"고 설명했다.
이어 "어떤 경우에도 정치인 조국과 조국혁신당의 비전과 가치, 정치적 DNA는 사라져서는 안 된다"며 "이 정치적 DNA는 보존돼야 할 뿐 아니라 확대돼야 한다는 원칙에 기초해 최근 발생한 민주당의 합당 제안 사안을 논의하고 결정할 것"이라고 강조했다.
조국혁신당은 이날 의원총회와 오는 26일 예정된 당무위원회를 거쳐 합당 방식과 지도부 구성 등 주요 쟁점 사안을 구체적으로 검토할 전망이다.
이날 비공개로 진행된 의원총회에서는 민주당 합당 제안과 관련한 경과 설명과 함께 의원들의 의견 제시가 이뤄진 것으로 전해졌다.
조 대표는 이에 대해 "정청래 대표가 어떻게 제안했고, 제가 어떻게 대응했는지 상황을 공유했다"며 "큰 틀에서 제 생각과 의원들 간 의견 차이가 거의 없다는 점을 확인했다"고 말했다.
민주당 내부에서 합당에 대한 반발이 나오는 것과 관련해서는 "우당이고 집권 여당 내부 상황에 대해 감놔라 배놔라 말하는 것은 예의에 어긋난다"며 "민주당이 스스로 의견을 정리할 것으로 예상할 뿐, 이에 대해 논평하는 것은 적절하지 않다"고 선을 그었다.
지방선거를 앞두고 합당 시한을 언제로 보느냐는 질문에도 "민주당에 달려 있다"며 "민주당 내부에서 격론이 이어지고 있는 만큼, 그 안에서 정리해 나갈 것으로 본다"고 답했다.
한편 민주당과 조국혁신당 간 합당론은 정청래 민주당 대표가 지난 22일 공식 제안하면서 본격적으로 공론화됐다. 당시 조 대표는 "국민의 마음과 뜻이 가리키는 방향에 따라 논의하고 결정하겠다"며 당내 의견 수렴을 지시한 바 있다.
