브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 삼성이 K-컬처의 글로벌 품격을 높이고 있는 ‘이건희(KH) 컬렉션’ 첫 해외 순회 전시의 폐막을 앞두고 갈라 디너를 개최했다.
삼성은 28일(현지시각) 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 스미스소니언 예술산업관(Arts and Industries Building)에서 이건희 컬렉션 전시회의 성공적인 마무리를 기념하는 갈라 디너 행사를 열었다고 밝혔다.
스미스소니언 국립아시아예술박물관(NMAA)에서 진행 중인 고(故) 이건희 회장 기증품 해외 순회전의 첫 번째 전시 ‘한국의 보물 : 모으고, 아끼고, 나누다(Korean Treasures: Collected, Cherished, Shared)’는 국립중앙박물관과 국립현대미술관이 공동 개최, 오는 2월 1일까지 일반에 공개 중이다.
스미스소니언 갈라 디너에는 하워드 러트닉 상무부 장관을 포함한 미국의 정·관계 인사, 글로벌 기업 경영진, 문화계 인사 등 총 250여명이 참석했다.
정관계에서는 △로리 차베스-디레머 노동부 장관 △마이클 크라치오스백악관 과학기술정책실장 △팀 스콧 공화당 상원의원 △테드 크루즈 공화당 상원의원 △앤디 킴 민주당 상원의원 △웨스 무어 메릴랜드주 주지사 △강경화 주미 한국 대사 등이 참석했다.
재계에서는 정의선 현대차그룹 회장 및 △웬델 윅스 코닝 회장 △제리 양 야후 공동창업자 △개리 디커슨 어플라이드머티리얼즈 CEO △누바 아페얀 플래그십 파이오니어링 CEO △베네데토 비냐 페라리 CEO 등이 함께 했다.

이 회장과 홍라희 명예관장은 귀빈들에게 故 이건희 선대회장이 강조했던 한국 문화에 대한 자긍심과, 미술품 기증의 토대가 된 사회공헌 철학을 소개했다.
갈라 디너 참석자들은 전시회 관람 후 만찬을 하며 한국 문화유산의 품격을 체험하고 한국측 인사들과 교류하는 등 한미 우호관계를 다졌으며, 만찬에 이어 한국을 대표하는 성악가 조수미를 비롯해 피아니스트 선우예권, 바이올리니스트 정누리 등의 공연이 진행됐다.
참석자들은 갈라 디너를 주최한 삼성의 노력을 긍정적으로 평가하며, 이번 순회전이 한미 양국의 상호 유대 및 번영 증진에 기여할 것이라고 전했다.
이번 순회전이 열린 워싱턴 D.C.는 미국의 수도로서 정관계 인사들의 주무대이자 한미 동맹을 상징하는 도시다.
팀 스콧 의원은 “이번 순회전은 지속적인 한미 동맹이 경제적 유대 뿐 아니라, 우리 모두를 연결하는 이야기들과 공유된 가치를 토대로 구축됐다는 점을 강하게 상기시켜 준다”고 전했다.

이 회장은 미국 정관계 주요 인사와 코닝, 플래그십 파이오니어링 등 협력 관계에 있는 주요 기업의 핵심 경영진과도 교류하며 삼성의 미래 준비를 위한 글로벌 네트워크를 강화했다.
이 회장은 이날 인사말을 통해 “이번 전시를 미국의 수도인 워싱턴 D.C.에서 선보일 수 있어 큰 영광이었다”며 “미국과 한국의 국민들이 서로 더 가까워지는 계기가 될 것이라 믿는다”고 말했다.
이어 “6∙25 전쟁에 참전했던 영웅들을 이 자리에 모실 수 있게 돼 기쁘다”며 “당시 3만6000명이 넘는 미국 참전용사 분들의 희생이 없었다면 한국은 지금처럼 번영할 수 없었을 것이다”고 감사를 표했다.
그러면서 “6∙25 전쟁 등의 고난 속에서도 이병철 창업회장과 이건희 선대회장은 한국의 문화유산을 보존해야 한다는 굳건한 의지가 있었다”며 “홍라희 명예관장은 고대 유물부터 근현대 작품까지 컬렉션의 범위를 넓히고 다양화하는 데 헌신했다”고 덧붙였다.
한편, 이번 전시에는 이미 6만1000여명이 다녀갔으며 폐막까지 누적 6만5000명이 넘는 관람객이 모일 것으로 추산된다. 1월 중순 기준 일 평균 관람인원은 874명이며 갈수록 증가하고 있다.
이는 기존 스미스소니언에서 열렸던 유사한 규모의 전시회 관람 인원 대비 2배 이상이며, 스미스소니언측 예상을 훨씬 뛰어넘은 것이다.
미국의 공휴일인 ‘마틴 루터킹 데이(매년 1월 셋째주 월요일, 올해는 1월 19일)’에는 일 최다 관람객인 약 3500명이 전시회를 찾았다.
KH 컬렉션 글로벌 순회 전시는 이번 스미스소니언 특별전에 이어 △미국 시카고미술관(2026년 3월~7월) △영국 런던 영국박물관 (2026년 9월~2027년 1월) 순으로 진행될 예정이다.
