사단법인 국제현대예술협회(이사장 김용모)가 주최한 ‘2026 대한민국 오늘의 작가정신전’이 지난 1월 28일 개막했다. 오는 2월 2일까지 이어지는 이번 전시는 세대와 장르를 관통하는 170여 명 작가의 치열한 창작 정신이 응축된 자리다. 특히 1층 전시실에 일본 작가 8인의 참여는 이번 전시가 지닌 국제적 위상과 문화적 연대의 깊이를 증명하는 핵심적인 대목으로 한국 동시대 미술이 아시아의 감성과 조형성 속에서 어떤 확장 가능성을 지니는지를 보여주는 중요한 장면이다.
일본 참여 작가 ‘야스시 쿠니무네(Yasushi Kunimune)’, ‘요코 타카히라(Yoko Takahira)’, ‘히로시(Hiroshi)’, ‘사키 후지타(Saki Fujita)’, ‘키라(Kira)’, ‘아키나 니시오(Akina Nishio)’, ‘스이 우라야나기(Sui Urayanagi)’, ‘유카 오(YUKA.O,)’의 작품들은 일본 현대미술의 오늘과 내일을 동시에 보여준다. 이들의 작업에는 일본 특유의 섬세한 조형미와 현대적 감각이 고스란히 담겨 있다. 자세히 살피면 단순히 국경을 넘어 참여한 예전의 관례와 전혀 다른 탄탄한 완성도와 독자적 미학의 깊이를 살피게 된다.
8인의 일본 작가가 인사동 한복판에서 던지는 예술적 화두는 분명하다. 언어와 국경을 넘어서는 보편적 감성과, 각자의 문화적 토양에서 길어 올린 고유한 미의식이다. 이들의 참여는 ‘오늘의 작가 정신’이 머무는 지점이 한국을 넘어 아시아와 세계로 확장되고 있는 흐름임을 보여주는 중요한 미학적 징표이기도 하다.
국경 너머의 여러 작가 작품에 대하여 글을 쓴다는 것이 쉽지 않은 일이다. 그러나 그들의 작업을 따뜻하게 바라본 마음을 전하는 뜻에서 필자는 모든 작품을 집중하여 다음과 같이 살펴보았다.
기하학적 질서 속에 가둔 생명의 빛 - 야스시 쿠니무네(Yasushi Kunimune)
야스시 쿠니무네(Yasushi Kunimune)의 작품 ‘해바라기를 품은 꽈리(Chinese Lantern – Sunflower)’는 언뜻 대가 쿠사마 야요이의 장식적 숨결을 차용한 듯 보이나, 그 기법의 독자성을 면밀히 살피면 작가만의 조형적 특성이 뚜렷이 드러나는 고유한 세계가 펼쳐진다.
작가는 정교한 아크릴 기법을 통해 대상의 본질을 투과해 시각적 유희와 긴장감을 동시에 담아내고 있다. 작품에서 꽈리를 형상화한 격자무늬 원형 구조는 검은색과 흰색의 줄무늬, 그리고 무수한 점들이 직조해 낸 현대적 레이스의 표면이다. 그 틈새로 비치는 화사한 해바라기의 형상은 강인한 생명력의 응축을 상징한다.
외부의 기하학적 질서와 내부의 유기적 생명력이 조화를 이루는 이 작품은 무수한 점들로 채워진 배경과 대비되며, 대상이 지닌 신비로운 아우라를 극대화한다. 이는 보이지 않는 내면의 미(美)를 발견하게 하는 철학적 통찰을 담고 있으며, 세밀한 기법 속에서 장식적 미학의 정수가 또렷하게 드러난다.
부서진 파편들이 일궈낸 빛의 찬가 - 요코 타카히라(Yoko Takahira)
작가의 작품 ‘라 브리에(La Briller)’는 아크릴 물감과 유리(glass)라는 이질적인 재료를 조화시켜, 화면 가득 부서지는 빛의 파편들을 찬란하게 재현한 작품이다. ‘빛나다’라는 제목처럼 목판 캔버스 위에 겹겹이 배치된 유리의 질감은 외부의 빛을 반사하고 투과시키며 마치 보석을 흩뿌려 놓은 듯한 시각적 황홀경을 드러낸다.

인연이 순환하는 먹의 서사 – 히로시(Hiroshi)
히로시(Hiroshi)의 작품 ‘순회(廻–Meguru)’는 동양의 전통적 먹(Sumi ink)과 현대적 염료(dye)의 대담한 결합을 통해, 존재들 사이에 흐르는 끊임없는 교류와 순환을 형상화한 작품이다. 화면 위로 흩뿌려진 다채로운 빛의 파편들은 우리가 살아가는 복잡다단한 인연의 장(場)을 상징한다.
그 중심을 관통하는 힘 있는 선의 원형적 운동은 만물이 서로 연결되어 회귀하는 ‘순환’의 섭리를 집약적으로 보여준다. 전통 서예의 호쾌한 필치와 현대적 색채 감각이 조화를 이루는 이 작품은, 일본 현대미술이 지닌 섬세한 조형적 미학 속에 인연이 지닌 깊은 가치와 삶의 의미를 일깨우는 사유의 흔적을 담아내고 있다.
투명한 실크(노방)의 숨결 - 사키 후지타(Saki Fujita)
작가의 작품 ‘실크(노방)의 개화(Organza Bloom)’는 수채화처럼 투명한 색채의 번짐과 아크릴 물감의 유기적 결합을 통해, 마치 얇은 실크(노방) 천이 겹겹이 포개진 듯한 생명력의 신비를 드러낸다.
목판 위에 흐르듯 배치된 맑은 물감의 질감은 인위적 터치보다 우연이 빚어낸 찰나의 미학을 포착하고 있으며, 화면 곳곳에 번져있는 파스텔 색조는 몽환적이면서도 세련된 미감을 선사한다.

The "2026 Korea Today's Artists' Spirit Exhibition," hosted by the International Contemporary Art Association (Chairman Yongmo Kim), opened on January 28th. Running until February 2nd, the exhibition encapsulates the fierce creative spirit of approximately 170 artists spanning generations and genres. The participation of eight Japanese artists in the first-floor exhibition hall is a key demonstration of the exhibition's international stature and depth of cultural solidarity, demonstrating the expansive potential of Korean contemporary art within the context of Asian sensibilities and formativeness.
The works of the Japanese participating artists—Yasushi Kunimune, Yoko Takahira, Hiroshi, Saki Fujita, Kira, Akina Nishio, Sui Urayanagi, and YUKA.O—present both the present and the future of Japanese contemporary art. Their work embodies both Japan's distinctively delicate aesthetic and a contemporary sensibility. A closer look reveals a solid level of completion and a unique aesthetic depth that departs entirely from the traditional practice of simply transcending national boundaries.
The artistic questions raised by these eight Japanese artists in the heart of Insadong are clear: a universal sensibility transcending language and borders, and a unique aesthetic cultivated from their respective cultural backgrounds. Their participation is also a significant aesthetic sign that demonstrates the expansion of the "spirit of today's artists" beyond Korea, encompassing Asia and the world.
Writing about the works of these diverse artists is no easy task. However, in the spirit of sharing my warm appreciation for their work, I have carefully examined each piece, as follows:
The Light of Life Entrapped in Geometric Order - Yasushi Kunimune
