【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=POSTECH(포항공과대학교) 수학연구소와 KIAS(고등과학원) 허준이수학난제연구소가 공동 주관한 제21회 ‘일주(一洲)수학학교’가 지난 1월 26일부터 30일까지 고등과학원에서 열려 성황리에 마무리됐다.

이번 수학학교는 산업수학 난제 연구를 이끌어 온 국가수리과학연구소 최윤성 소장(POSTECH 수학과 명예교수)과 순수수학 분야 난제 연구를 선도하는 허준이수학난제연구소의 강남규·이우영 교수가 공동으로 주관했다.
기조 초청강연에는 미국 텍사스 A&M대학교의 토머스 슐룸프레히트(Thomas Schlumprecht) 교수, 일리노이대학교 어바나-샴페인 캠퍼스의 티무르 오이크베르크(Timur Oikhberg) 교수, 아르헨티나 부에노스아이레스대학교의 다니엘 카란도(Daniel Carando) 교수, 스페인 그라나다대학교의 미겔 마르틴(Miguel Martín) 교수가 참여했다. 특히 슐룸프레히트 교수는 2026년 국제수학자대회(ICM) 함수해석학 분야 초청강연자로 선정된 석학으로, 각 연사는 세 차례의 강연을 통해 함수해석학 분야의 핵심 연구 주제와 최신 연구 성과를 소개했다.
이 밖에도 우크라이나, 중국, 체코 등 세계 각국의 저명한 수학자들이 참석해 함수해석학 분야의 최신 연구 동향과 주요 쟁점을 주제로 강연을 진행했다. 참가자들은 강연 이후 심도 있는 토론을 이어가며 새로운 연구 주제를 발굴하고 국제 공동연구의 가능성을 모색했다.
최윤성 명예교수는 “이번 행사를 계기로 첨단 연구 주제에 대한 국제 공동연구가 확대되고, 연구자 세대 간 활발한 교류를 통해 국내 신진 연구그룹이 세계적 수준으로 도약하길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
한편 ‘일주수학학교’는 일주학술문화재단의 후원으로 2009년부터 매년 개최되고 있으며, 학부생과 대학원생, 박사후연구원, 교수들이 자유로운 토론과 지식 교류를 통해 세계 수학 발전에 기여하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.

POSTECH and KIAS Successfully Conclude the 21st "One-Week Mathematics School"… World-Renowned Scholars Gather
The 21st "One-Week Mathematics School," co-hosted by the POSTECH Mathematics Research Institute and the KIAS Heo Jun-i Institute for Advanced Study, successfully concluded at KIAS from January 26th to 30th.
This school was co-organized by Choi Yoon-seong, Director of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS), Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at POSTECH, who has led the research on challenging industrial mathematics, and Professors Kang Nam-gyu and Lee Woo-young of the Heo Jun-i Institute for Advanced Study, who are leading the research on challenging problems in pure mathematics.
Keynote speakers included Professor Thomas Schlumprecht of Texas A&M University, USA; Professor Timur Oikhberg of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Professor Daniel Carando of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Professor Miguel Martín of the University of Granada, Spain. Professor Schlumprecht, a distinguished scholar who has been selected as an invited lecturer in the field of functional analysis for the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), presented three lectures, each introducing core research topics and recent research achievements in the field.
Furthermore, renowned mathematicians from around the world, including Ukraine, China, and the Czech Republic, presented lectures on the latest research trends and key issues in functional analysis. Following the lectures, participants engaged in in-depth discussions, exploring new research topics and opportunities for international collaborative research.
Professor Emeritus Choi Yoon-seong stated, "I hope this event will serve as a catalyst for expanding international collaborative research on cutting-edge research topics and fostering active exchanges between generations of researchers, enabling Korea's emerging research groups to leap forward to world-class standards."
Meanwhile, the "Ilju Mathematics School," held annually since 2009 with the support of the Ilju Academic and Cultural Foundation, aims to contribute to the advancement of global mathematics through open discussion and knowledge exchange among undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and professors.
