김정관 산업통상부 장관이 자신감을 보였던 러트닉 미 상무장관과의 회담은 결국 빈손으로 끝났다. 여한구 통상교섭본부장은 그리어 USTR 대표를 만나보지도 못한 채 귀국했다. 조현 외교부 장관과 루비오 국무장관의 회담 역시 성과가 있었다고 보기 어렵다. 이쯤 되면 문제의 본질은 분명하다. 대미 투자 특별법의 조속한 처리가 그렇게 절실했다면, 최소한 야당이 요구한 국회 비준 동의 절차라도 밟았어야 했다.
법률안 차원의 문제라면, 비준동의안 처리 요구가 결코 무리한 주장이 아니었다는 사실이 결과로 입증된 셈이다.
그럼에도 국회 비준 처리 요구를 묵살하고, 마음만 먹으면 어떤 법이든 일방 처리해 오던 이재명 대통령과 여당이 이제 와서 국회 탓으로 책임을 돌리는 모습은 황당하기 그지없다. 자기 손으로 열어젖힌 문 앞에서, 남 탓을 하는 꼴이다. 관세 25% 회귀와 관보 게재를 눈앞에 둔 엄중한 상황에서, 이른바 ‘팩트 시트’의 당사자인 이재명 대통령의 침묵은 길어지고 있다. 이는 국민에 대한 도리도, 우리 산업계에 대한 책임 있는 태도도 아니다.
더 기이한 것은, 최근 폭풍처럼 SNS 메시지를 쏟아내면서도 정작 관세 문제에 대해서는 단 한마디도 하지 않고 있다는 점이다. 신기할 정도다. 아니, 의도적 침묵에 가깝다. “신라 금관과 황금 훈장”이라는 말까지 나왔던 조공 외교의 결실은 어디로 사라졌는가. 비서실장과 국무총리가 그토록 자랑하던 미국 측과의 핫라인은 왜 흔적도 없이 실종되었는가. 최소한의 설명이라도 있어야 하지 않는가. 그것이 국정 최고 책임자의 의무이자, 국민에 대한 최소한의 예의다.
이재명 정부가 자랑해 온 한·미 관세 협상과 핫라인의 실체를 이제는 밝혀야 한다. 잘못과 책임은 철저히 외면한 채, 말하기 좋은 이슈로 덮고 물타기하는 정치도 한두 번이다. 이쯤 되면, 너무 심하다. 이제 다른 소리는 그만하라. 한.미 관세의 팩트시트를 솔직하게 국민에게 고하라.
