2024년 2월 4일 제66회 그래미상 시상식에서였다. 시상식 중 지난 한 해 동안 세상을 떠난 음악가들을 기리는 공식 헌정 시간인 추모 코너(In Memoriam)에 1980년대 신스팝 듀오 그룹 유리드믹스에서 활동한 스코틀랜드 출신 가수이자 사회 운동가인 애니 레녹스가 무대에 섰다. 가수는 2023년 7월 56세의 나이로 세상을 떠난 아일랜드 가수 시네이드 오코너의 대표곡 ‘너와 견줄 사람은 없어(Nothing Compares 2 U)’를 불러 가수가 남긴 음악과 삶의 흔적을 기렸다.
필자는 당시 그래미상 중계를 보면서 애니 레녹스의 뺨을 스치던 그 가느다란 빛으로 흐르던 선을 기억한다. 그것이 실제 눈물이었는지, 혹은 조명 아래서 순간적으로 생겨난 흔적이었는지는 중요하지 않았다. 그 순간의 장면은 시네이드 오코너가 ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ 뮤직비디오 후반에서 흘렸던 눈물을 전율처럼 떠올리게 한 까닭이다.
1966년 아일랜드 수도 더블린에서 태어난 시네이드 오코너는 어린 시절 상처 깊은 학대와 짓눌림을 오직 노래를 출구로 삼아 성장하였다. 그와 같은 삶에 녹아내린 감성은 1987년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 ‘사자와 코브라(The Lion and the Cobra)’를 통하여 마치 번개처럼 그녀의 존재를 알렸다. 그녀의 데뷔 앨범 ‘사자와 코브라’는 시편 91장 13절 “네가 사자와 독사를 밟으며, 젊은 사자와 뱀을 발로 누르리로다”에서 가져온 제목으로 앨범에 실린 9곡 중 7곡이 그녀의 작사와 작곡으로 이루어졌으며 나머지 2곡도 공동 작업한 작품이었다. 당시 21살 나이의 신인이 유명 레이블에서 발표한 앨범을 거의 단독으로 작사, 작곡한 경우는 그 유례를 찾기 힘든 사례였다.

그는 모든 장르의 음악을 완전하게 자신의 언어로 삼키고 쏟아내 박자, 음계, 리듬, 보컬의 누구나 비켜 가지 않는 규칙을 해체한 음악가다. 무려 5옥타브에 이르는 음역 속에서도 정교한 가성과 공격적인 샤우팅이 흐트러지지 않은 가수였으며 특히 그의 기타 연주는 기타의 신 에릭 클랩튼이 “저 사람은 뭐냐”라고 할 정도의 초월적인 연주력까지 구사하였다. 세계 음악계는 그의 생전에 ‘21세기 모차르트’로 ‘팝 역사상 가장 완전한 음악가’로 평가한 전설이었다.
프린스가 세상에 내놓았지만, 빛을 보지 못했던 노래는 시네이드 오코너의 목소리에서 세계를 울리는 기도로 다시 태어났다. 이후 그녀는 아동 학대, 인권, 인종차별과 같은 시대가 외면하던 상처들을 자신의 무대 한가운데로 등장시켰다.
1992년 10월 3일이었다. 미국 NBC 생방송 프로그램 ‘토요일 밤의 라이브(Saturday Night Live)’는 시네이드 오코너의 단독 공연이었다. 가수는 밴드 없이 혼자 무대에 올라 밥 말리의 ‘전쟁(War)’을 아카펠라로 부르며 원곡의 인종차별 내용 가사를 가톨릭교회 내의 아동 성 학대 내용으로 바꾸어 불렀다. 노래 마지막 구절에 이르자 그녀는 당시 교황 요한 바오로 2세의 사진을 카메라 앞에서 찢으며 ‘진짜 적과 싸워라(Fight the real enemy).’라고 외쳤다. 그 순간 방송은 즉시 광고 화면으로 바뀌었다.
