2월12일, 이재명 대통령과 여야 대표의 오찬 회동이 결국 불발되었다. 청와대와 민주당은 “소통과 협치의 자리가 무산돼 유감”이라는 입장을 내놨다. 그러나 그 말의 본질은 다르다. 야당을 들러리 세워 ‘소통 쇼’를 연출할 기회를 놓친 데 대한 아쉬움일 뿐이다. 그동안 청와대 초청 야당 지도부 오찬은 진정한 협치의 장이 아니었다. 국민을 향한 메시지용, 이른바 ‘수박 겉핥기식’ 소통 이미지 관리에 가까웠다. 내용은 비어 있고, 사진만 남는 정치였다.
특히 이번 사안은 그 성격이 더욱 심각하다. 야당이 “사법부 장악 시도에는 국회가 없다”고 경고했음에도, 청와대 회동을 하루 앞두고 3심제의 원칙을 사실상 4심제로 바꾸는 헌법소원법을 일방 처리했다. 이는 헌정질서를 뒤흔드는 일이다. 결과적으로 이재명 대통령의 ‘4중 방탄’을 완성하기 위한 폭주로 비칠 수밖에 없다. 사법부를 장악해 권력을 방어하려는 시도라면, 그것은 민주공화국의 길이 아니라 괴물 독재체제의 신호탄일 뿐이다.
