더불어민주당 조승래 사무총장(대전 유성구갑)이 최근 동력 상실이 우려되고 있는 대전·충남 행정통합과 관련해 “타 지역은 속도를 내는데 우리만 낙오될 경우 국가 지원에서 ‘패싱’되는 심각한 위기에 직면할 것”이라며 대전시와 충남도의 적극적인 결단을 촉구했다.
조 총장은 19일 오전 대전시의회 기자실에서 가진 언론 간담회에서 설 명절 민심을 전하며 행정통합에 대한 입장을 상세히 밝혔다.
그는 일부 시민들이 우려하는 ‘대전 정체성 상실’과 ‘자산 가치 하락’에 대해 “과거 대전이 대덕군을 흡수하며 광역시로 성장했듯, 이번 통합은 대전의 영향력이 충남 남부권으로 확장되는 계기”라고 일축했다.
특히 금산, 공주, 논산 등 대전 인접 남부 지역을 언급하며 “수도권 인접 효과를 보는 북부권과 달리, 소멸 위기인 남부권을 대전 중심으로 개발해 새로운 성장 거점을 만들어야 한다”며 “이 과정에서 대전은 쇠퇴가 아닌 비약적인 발전을 이룰 것”이라고 내다봤다.

조 총장은 특히 이재명 정부가 약속한 ‘재임 기간 내 최대 20조 원 규모의 통합 지원금’의 파급력을 강조했다. 그는 “연간 5조 원, 총 20조 원은 세종시 건설 비용에 맞먹는 엄청난 예산”이라며 “이 돈이 우리 지역을 건너뛰고 타 통합 지자체로만 흘러간다면 그 격차는 회복 불가능해질 것”이라고 경고했다.
