기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)이 단기적 홍보에 그치지 않고 진정한 '동행'이 되기까지는 얼마나 걸릴까. 삼천리그룹이 출연한 천만문화재단이 그 답을 40년이라는 시간으로 증명했다.
천만문화재단은 24일 ‘제40기 장학증서 수여식’을 개최하고, 총 220여 명의 고등학생 및 대학생에게 10억 원 규모의 장학금을 전달했다. 1987년 설립 이래 단 한 해도 멈추지 않고 이어온 이 행사는 지금까지 3,500여 명의 ‘천만 장학생’을 배출하며 국내 대표적 인재 육성 요람으로 자리매김했다.
천만문화재단의 장학 제도는 여타 재단과 차별화되는 ‘롱-스테이(Long-stay) 지원’ 방식이 특징이다. 고교 시절 선발된 장학생이 대학 입시에 전념할 수 있도록 돕는 것은 물론, 대학 입학 후 4년간 등록금 전액을 지원한다. 이는 인재 중시 경영을 강조한 삼천리그룹 故이장균 창업회장의 유지와 이만득 현 회장의 나눔 철학이 반영된 것으로, 학생들이 경제적 부담 없이 학업과 예술에 몰두할 수 있는 실질적인 토대를 제공한다.
재단은 최근 장학사업의 범위를 문화예술 분야로 대폭 확장하며 ‘천만문화재단’으로 새롭게 출범, 사회적 역할을 더욱 키우고 있다. 특히 2023년부터 시작된 청년 작가 공모전 ‘천만 아트 포 영(Chunman Art for Young)’은 올해 4회차를 맞으며 신진 예술인들의 등용문으로 부상했다. 장학금이 학문의 벽을 낮췄다면, 공모전은 예술의 문턱을 낮춰 차세대 창작 생태계를 지원하는 셈이다.
단순한 금전적 지원에 그치지 않고, 장학생들이 에너지 취약 계층에 연탄을 전달하는 등 지역사회 봉사활동에 직접 참여하게 함으로써 ‘배움과 나눔’의 선순환을 실천하고 있다는 점도 눈길을 끈다.
천만문화재단 관계자는 “지난 40년간의 동행은 인재들이 꿈을 펼칠 수 있는 든든한 버팀목이 되기 위한 과정이었다”며 “앞으로도 장학생들이 우리 사회의 공동체 의식을 갖춘 진정한 리더로 성장할 수 있도록 배움의 동반자 역할을 충실히 수행할 것”이라고 강조했다.

True corporate social responsibility is defined by consistency. Chunman Cultural Foundation, established by the Samchully Group, has proven this by marking the 40th anniversary of its scholarship program.
On the 24th, the foundation held its 40th Scholarship Certificate Ceremony, awarding a total of 1 billion KRW to 220 students. Since its inception on May 1, 1987, the program has grown with approximately 3,500 scholarship recipients, serving as a cradle for future leaders.
The foundation's system is unique for its "Long-stay Support" model. Students selected in high school receive support to focus on their studies, followed by full 4-year university tuition coverage. This reflects the philosophy of Samchully Group’s founders and current Chairman Lee Man-deuk, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder academic and artistic pursuits.
Recently, the foundation has expanded its mission under the name Chunman Cultural Foundation. Its signature competition, ‘Chunman Art for Young,’ launched in 2023, has become a prestigious gateway for emerging artists, providing them with exhibition opportunities and creative stability.
Beyond financial aid, the foundation encourages social contribution. Scholars participate in community service, such as delivering coal briquettes to the energy-vulnerable, fostering a sense of community. "Our 40-year journey has been about being a reliable partner for students chasing their dreams," said a foundation official. "We will continue to support talent so they can grow into leaders who practice the values of learning and sharing."
