26일 김경원 영천시장 출마예정자 측에 따르면, 김 예정자는 서울 여의도 국민의힘 중앙당사 앞에서 이만희 의원(영천·청도 당협위원장)의 사퇴를 촉구하는 1인 시위를 진행했다.
이날 김 예정자는 ‘복당 불허, 당협 부실 관리 등 영천·청도 당협위원장 이만희는 사퇴하라’는 문구가 적힌 피켓을 들고 이 의원의 지역구 관리 문제를 강도 높게 비판했다.
김 예정자 측은 “현재 영천시는 최기문 시장이 3선 도전을 앞두고 있음에도, 당협위원장이 사적 감정으로 유력 인사들의 복당과 입당을 원천 차단하고 있다”고 주장했다. 이어 2018년과 2022년 지방선거에서 국민의힘이 무소속 시장 후보에게 연이어 패배한 점을 거론하며, 당협의 중재 기능 부재와 조직 운영의 문제점을 지적했다.
또 지역 내 각종 구설을 언급하며 이 의원 책임론을 제기했다. 국민의힘 소속 시의원의 탈당 사례를 비롯해 청도군수 막말 논란, 도의원 사생활 구설수 등을 거론하며 “공천 검증 시스템의 한계가 드러났다”고 비판했다.
김 예정자 측은 2026년 지방선거의 공정성 확보를 위해 △모바일 대리투표 우려 차단을 위한 당원 투표 ARS 방식 통일 △비호감도 상승 지역에 대한 중앙당 공천관리위원회 직접 주관 등을 요구했다.
한편 지역 정가 일각에서는 이번 사안을 공천을 앞둔 주도권 경쟁의 일환으로 보는 시각도 제기된다. 당협 측의 공식 입장과 중앙당의 대응 여부에 관심이 쏠리고 있다.
