마당극패 우금치가 제107주년 3·1절 기념 문화행사 ‘1919 그날의 함성’에서 1919년 만세운동을 재현한 대규모 퍼포먼스 <대한 독립 만세>를 선보이며 뜨거운 호응을 얻었다.
1일 천안 독립기념관 겨레의 큰마당에서 열린 이 행사는 우금치의 시민 참여형 공연으로 절정에 달했다.
극단은 행사 2주 전부터 연령·직업 무관 시민 자원봉사자 1919명을 공개 모집해 사전 리허설을 진행, 단순 재현을 넘어 공동체 예술 프로젝트로 완성시켰다.

무대 위 배우와 아래 시민이 어우러진 북소리·태극기 물결 속 집단 만세는 세대를 초월한 장관을 연출하며 현장을 감동의 도가니로 몰아넣었다.
우금치는 마당극과 전통연희 형식을 바탕으로 3·1운동의 역사적 배경을 생생히 되살렸다.
아우내장터 만세운동 등 천안 지역 맥락을 반영한 장면은 관람객들의 자발적 참여를 이끌어내, 아이부터 어르신까지 함께 외치는 ‘대한독립만세’ 함성으로 이어졌다.

이 퍼포먼스는 라라앙상블 음악, 천안시립풍물단 풍물 등과 어우러져 행사의 하이라이트를 장식했다.
류기형 예술감독은 “3·1은 과거가 아닌 살아 숨 쉬는 정신”이라며 “1919명 시민과 함께한 만세는 우리 모두가 역사의 주체라는 확인의 순간이었다”고 밝혔다. 그는 “앞으로 역사 기억을 오늘 언어로 풀어내는 창작을 지속하겠다”고 포부를 드러냈다.
이번 공연은 우금치가 주도한 시민·공공기관 협력 콘텐츠로, 태극기 에코백 만들기 등 체험과 연계돼 나라사랑 교육의 장을 열었다.

Madang Theater Troupe Ugeumchi received enthusiastic responses with its large-scale performance, "Manse, Korean Independence," reenacting the 1919 Independence Movement at the "Shout of 1919," a cultural event commemorating the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement.
The event, held on March 1st at the Cheonan Independence Hall's Great Yard of the People, culminated in Ugeumchi's citizen-participatory performance.
Two weeks prior to the event, the troupe publicly recruited 1,919 citizen volunteers of all ages and occupations for pre-rehearsals, transforming the performance into a community art project.
The collective "Manse" performance, performed by the actors on stage and the citizens below amidst the sound of drums and waves of Taegeukgi flags, created a spectacle that transcended generations and moved the audience to tears.
Ugeumchi vividly recreated the historical backdrop of the March 1st Movement through a combination of madanggeuk and traditional performance formats.
Scenes reflecting the Cheonan context, such as the Manse Movement at Aunae Market, evoked spontaneous participation from the audience, leading to cries of "Long Live the Independence of Korea" (Long Live the Independence of Korea) from children to the elderly.
This performance, combined with music from the Lala Ensemble and percussion from the Cheonan City Pungmul Troupe, marked the highlight of the event.
Artistic Director Ryu Ki-hyung stated, "March 1st is not a thing of the past, but a living, breathing spirit. The Manse demonstration with 1,919 citizens was a moment of confirmation that we are all subjects of history." He expressed his aspirations, saying, "We will continue to create works that interpret historical memories in contemporary language."
This performance, spearheaded by Ugeumchi and a collaborative effort between citizens and public institutions, opened a space for patriotic education through hands-on activities such as making Taegeukgi eco-bags.
