경주시는 지난 4일 시청 알천홀에서 공무원들을 대상으로 ‘i-SMR 부지선정 사업 설명회’를 개최했다고 밝혔다.
이번 설명회는 혁신형 SMR의 기술적 특성과 안전성, 경제적 가치에 대한 이해를 높이고 경주 유치의 필요성과 타당성을 행정 내부에서부터 공유하기 위해 마련됐다. 이를 통해 시는 향후 체계적인 유치 활동을 위한 행정 기반을 다진다는 방침이다.
이날 참석한 공무원들은 i-SMR 기술 개요와 국내외 추진 동향, 지역경제 파급효과 등에 대한 설명을 듣고 관련 교육을 이수했다. 특히 경주가 연구·실증·제조·운영 등 원전 산업 전 주기를 아우를 수 있는 기반을 갖춘 지역이라는 점을 다시 확인하는 계기가 됐다.
경주시는 행정 내부 공감대 형성을 바탕으로 시민 참여 확대에도 나선다.
시는 오는 13일 서라벌문화회관에서 지역 주민과 환경단체, 전문가 등 400여 명이 참석하는 ‘SMR 1호기 경주 유치 시민설명회’를 개최할 예정이다. 설명회에서는 i-SMR 유치의 필요성과 기대 효과를 설명하고 시민들의 다양한 의견을 폭넓게 수렴할 계획이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “i-SMR은 미래 에너지 산업의 핵심 분야”라며 “경주가 그동안 축적해 온 원전 산업 기반을 바탕으로 1호기 유치를 이뤄낼 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
한편 경주시는 시민설명회에서 제시되는 의견과 건의사항을 유치 신청 과정에 적극 반영하는 한편, 범시민 서명운동과 SNS 홍보 등을 통해 지역사회 공감대를 확대하며 i-SMR 1호기 유치를 위한 준비에 박차를 가할 계획이다.

Meanwhile, Gyeongju City plans to actively incorporate the opinions and suggestions presented at the briefing session into its application process. Furthermore, it plans to accelerate preparations for the i-SMR Unit 1 by expanding community consensus through a citywide signature campaign and social media promotion.
