대전 원도심에 지역 원로 화가 정영복의 예술 활동과 철학을 담은 복합 예술공간이 문을 열었다.
충남 공주에서 태어나 청양을 고향으로 둔 화가 정영복(鄭泳福, 1937년생) 화가는 90세의 나이에도 여전히 붓을 내려놓지 않는다.
서라벌예대(현 중앙대) 시절부터 그림을 삶의 언어로 삼아온 그는, “예술은 세련된 기교가 아니라 인간의 삶을 향한 자유와 사랑의 표현”이라는 신념으로 평생을 이어왔다.

정영복 화가는 서라벌예대(현 중앙대)를 졸업하고, 중등 미술 교사로 임용돼 36년간 충남과 대전 지역 교육 현장에 몸담으며 후학 양성에 헌신했다.
재직 중에도 창작 활동을 이어오며 개인전 13회, 단체전 수백 회를 개최하는 등 활발한 작품 활동을 펼쳐왔다.
그는 ‘대전 구상작가 협회’, ‘대전 수채화 협회’, ‘화연회(대전 원로작가협회)’, ‘충남의 자연전’ 등을 창립하며 지역 미술계의 기반 조성에 기여했다. 정 화가는 화려한 표현보다 절제된 색감과 구도를 통해 인간과 일상의 본질을 탐구하는 화풍으로 평가받는다.

최근에는 대전 중구 대흥동 문화예술의 거리(중앙로 112번길 29)에 ‘정영복 미술공간’을 개관했다.
이 공간은 1·2층 전시장, 3층 작가의 작업실, 4층 제자들의 창작 공간으로 구성돼 있으며, 시민과 예술인이 자유롭게 소통할 수 있는 지역 개방형 예술공간으로 운영된다.
정영복 화가는 이곳에 미디어 아트 갤러리와 상설 전시공간을 조성해 올해 3월부터 상영 및 전시를 시작할 계획이다. 더불어 매년 젊은 작가 2~3명을 초대해 전시 기회를 제공, 지역 미술 생태계의 순환과 세대 간 교류를 촉진할 예정이다.

정 화가는 세련된 기교보다 소박한 붓질 속에서 ‘우리의 정과 혼’을 전하고자 한다. 그의 작품과 미술공간은 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 형성된 자연과 시간, 삶의 흔적이 켜켜이 쌓인 풍경과도 같다.
대전 원도심 한복판에서 시작된 이 원로 화가의 새로운 도전은, 개인의 창작을 넘어 지역 예술문화의 지속적인 성장과 세대 잇기의 상징적인 공간으로 자리매김할 것으로 기대된다.

Painter Jeong graduated from Seorabeol College of Arts (now Chung-Ang University) and was appointed a secondary school art teacher. He dedicated 36 years to nurturing young artists in the Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon areas, where he worked as an art teacher.
Even during his tenure, he continued his creative pursuits, holding 13 solo exhibitions and hundreds of group exhibitions.
He contributed to the foundation of the local art scene by founding the Daejeon Figurative Artists Association, the Daejeon Watercolor Association, the Hwayeonhoe (Daejeon Senior Artists Association), and the Chungnam Nature Exhibition.
