이란전쟁의 불길은 어디까지 확산되고 오래 갈까, 아니면 이란의 신정체제가 종식되고 조기에 꺼질까? 우리의 희망은 후자지만, 전쟁의 미래는 불투명하다. 제2차세계대전 이후 80년 동안 한국전쟁, 베트남전쟁, 이라크전쟁이 있었고, 지금도 러시아와 우크라이나가 전쟁 중이다. 그러나 이번의 이란전쟁은 그런 국지적 전쟁과 차원이 다르다. 이란 전쟁의 근원은 미중간의 패권경쟁이다. 1991년 소련붕괴 이후 미국의 단일패권을 위협할 나라는 없었다. 그런데 1978년 등소평 이후 무서운 고도성장으로 중국GDP는 미국 GDP의 65%를 넘어서고 있다.

중국은 이 경제력으로 군비를 강화하고 대만을 무력으로 통일하려 한다. 뿐만 아니라 세계 도처에서, 또 모든 분야에서, 미국의 패권에 도전장을 내밀고 있다. 인류역사에서 어떤 패권국도 응전하지 않고 순순히 패권을 내준 나라는 없다.
고대 알렉산더제국이나 로마제국도, 중세 몽골제국이나 근세의 대영제국도 패권을 유지하기 위해 전쟁을 불사했다. 미국은 트럼프 1기 때부터 중국의 패권추구에 응전을 선언했다. '미국을 다시 위대하게(MAGA)'가 바로 그 슬로건이다.
이렇게 이란전쟁이 갖는 함의(含意)는 넓고 깊다. 단순히 이란의 핵야망이나 석유자원의 문제가 아니다. 그러므로 이 전쟁은 우리에게 결코 강건너 불이 아니다. 어정쩡한 중립이나 방관은 우리의 선택지가 될 수 없다.

그러나 분명한 것은 우리와 미국이 자유민주주의라는 가치를 공유한다는 사실, 미국이 앞으로 적어도 30년 이상 세계질서를 주도할 것이라는 사실, 중국도 격렬한 문명의 변화로부터 자유로울 수 없다는 사실이다.
그러므로 우리는 미국과의 동맹을 굳건히 발전시켜 나가야 한다. 그런 동맹의 시각으로 이란전쟁을 바라보고 대처해나가야 한다. 이재명 정권은 이러한 전제를 명심해야 할 것이다.
