권선택 전 대전시장이 차기 지방선거 시장 선거에 출마하지 않겠다고 밝혔다.
더불어민주당 복당 후 처음으로 가진 기자 간담회에서 권 전 시장은 시장직 복귀라는 오랜 목표를 내려놓고 선당후사의 자세로 당의 승리를 돕겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다.
권 전 시장은 11일 대전시의회 기자실에서 가진 기자간담회에서 "출마 여부와 향후 진로를 둘러싼 출처 불명의 소문이 많아 불확실성을 제거하기 위해 이자리를 만들게 됐다"고 설명했다.
그는 "2017년 시장직에서 내려온 이후 오로지 복귀만을 목표로 부단히 노력해왔다"며 "그것이 개인적으로는 명예 회복이고, 공적으로는 중도 하차하며 미완으로 남긴 과제들을 마무리하는 책임 있는 길이라 믿었다"고 회고했다.
그러나 권 전 시장은 "최근 이런 생각들이 나의 개인적인 욕심이었음을 반성했다"며 "시장 추구의 길을 멈추는 것이 공인으로서 걸어온 길에 부합하고, 대전 발전을 위해 매진해온 사람으로서 수미상관(首尾相關:처음 세웠던 원칙이나 태도를 마지막까지 흐트러짐 없이 유지)된 바른 길이라 판단했다"고 불출마 배경을 밝혔다.
지방선거 후보 지지 의사에 대해서는 경선 과정을 지켜본 뒤 판단하겠다며 신중한 입장을 보였다.
권 전 시장은 "2014년에는 민주당 후보가 거의 없었으나 현재는 4명이나 된다는 것은 그만큼 당의 정치 지형이 좋아졌음을 의미한다"며 후보군에 대한 개별 평가를 내놨다.
특히 박범계 의원에 대해 "4선 국회의원에 장관까지 지낸 대전의 정치 거목"이라며 "충청대망론이 나온다면 현재로선 가장 근접한 인물"이라고 치켜세웠다.
그러면서도 박 의원의 시장 출마 가능성이 거론되는 상황에 대해서는 대전의 정치적 거목으로서 더 큰 역할을 기대하는 취지의 아쉬움을 내비쳤다.
다른 후보들에 대해서는 장철민 의원을 "젊고 패기 있는 가치주"로, 장종태 의원을 "밑바닥부터 행정 경험을 쌓아온 지역 밀착형 후보"로 평가했다.
허태정 전 시장에 대해서는 "친화력이 좋으나 재임 기간 중 3년이 코로나 시기였던 점이 시장으로서 계획했던 일들에 차질을 빚어 아쉽다"고 언급했다.
행정 구역 통합 문제에 대해서는 강력한 찬성 의사를 표명했다. 권 전 시장은 "통합은 위협보다 기회 요인이 훨씬 많다"며 "광주·전남처럼 통합이 성사될 때 보장되는 20조 원 규모의 지원과 공공기관 이전 등의 혜택을 버리는 것은 너무나 아깝다"고 강조했다.
통합 반대 여론이 높은 것에 대해서는 "홍보와 설명이 부족해 시민들 사이에 의심과 걱정이 앞선 것"이라며 "잘못된 정보를 바로잡고 대화를 복원한다면 접점을 찾을 수 있을 것"이라고 진단했다.
특히 이번 과정에서 여야 협치와 시민단체와의 소통이 실종된 점에 대해 깊은 유감을 표시했다.
권선택 전 시장은 복당 과정에서의 정치적 거래설을 일축하며 "지금은 오직 지방선거 승리에 전념할 때"라고 못 박았다.
