대전 중구의회 김옥향 부의장이 제9회 전국동시지방선거에 출마하지 않겠다고 공식 밝혔다.
김 부의장은 11일 불출마 선언문을 통해 “정치는 자리를 지키는 것이 아니라 미래를 열어주는 것”이라며 “저부터 기득권을 내려놓겠다”고 밝혔다.
김 부의장은 “변화와 혁신을 말하면서도 정작 변화의 화살이 자신을 향하면 피하려 드는 기성 정치의 모습에 주민들 불신이 깊다”며 “그 비판을 겸허히 받아들여 스스로를 던지는 용기를 선택했다”고 말했다.
그러면서 “이번 결정이 새로운 인물과 청년들이 중구의 내일을 책임질 기회의 통로가 되길 바란다”고 강조했다.
지난 8년간 구의원으로 활동해온 그는 “구민들께서 보내주신 과분한 사랑과 800여 공직자 여러분의 헌신 덕분에 부의장의 소임까지 무사히 수행할 수 있었다”며 “제 인생에서 가장 행복한 시간이었다”고 소회를 전했다.
김 부의장은 불출마 이후에도 남은 임기 동안 현직에 충실하겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다. 그는 “불출마를 선언한다고 해서 제 발걸음이 멈추는 것은 아니다”라며 “임기 마지막 날까지 중구 구석구석을 살피며 유종의 미를 거두겠다”고 했다.
