대한민국 디스플레이 산업의 중심지인 충청남도가 인공지능(AI)을 접목한 차세대 디스플레이 기술 패권 장악을 위해 본격적인 행보에 나섰다.
충남도는 미래 디스플레이 시장의 지형을 바꿀 ‘첨단 디스플레이 국가연구플랫폼 구축 사업’이 과학기술정보통신부의 예비타당성 조사(예타) 대상에 최종 선정됐다고 12일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 단순한 기술 개발을 넘어 AI를 기반으로 한 개방형 플랫폼을 구축하는 것이 핵심이다. 이를 통해 ‘기초 연구’부터 ‘공정 실증’, ‘최종 양산’에 이르는 전주기 통합 지원 체계를 완성함으로써 글로벌 시장에서의 절대적 우위를 점한다는 복안이다.
사업 계획에 따르면, 충남도는 내년부터 2033년까지 7년간 총 5,200억 원의 사업비를 투입한다.
사업 대상지는 아산 탕정테크노 일반산업단지로, 이곳에 연면적 8,000㎡ 규모의 전용 연구원과 56종의 최첨단 장비를 도입해 국가 주도의 기술 허브를 조성할 예정이다.
구체적인 로드맵을 살펴보면, 2030년까지 2,000억 원을 들여 연구 인프라를 완비하고, 이후 2033년까지 3,200억 원을 추가 투입해 신소재, 소자, 공정 시스템 등 31개의 핵심 연구개발(R&D) 과제를 수행한다.

특히 이번 플랫폼은 충남도가 이미 추진 중인 디스플레이 혁신공정센터, 스마트모듈러센터와 연계되어 설계부터 제품화까지 한 번에 해결하는 ‘원스톱 지원 시스템’의 중추 역할을 맡게 된다.
이는 관련 기업의 이전과 전문 인력 유입을 촉진해 지역 경제의 선순환 생태계를 공고히 하는 계기가 될 전망이다.
안호 도 산업경제실장은 “이번 플랫폼 구축은 AI 기반의 제조 혁신을 통해 글로벌 디스플레이 시장을 선도할 핵심 거점을 마련하는 작업”이라며, “올해 하반기 예타 통과를 위해 모든 행정력을 집중하고 후속 절차 준비에도 만전을 기하겠다”고 강조했다.
한편, 충남도는 무기발광 디스플레이 기술 개발과 소부장 특화단지 지정 등 디스플레이 산업의 외연을 넓히기 위한 다양한 전략 사업을 병행하며 ‘디스플레이 메카’로서의 위상을 굳건히 하고 있다.
