이재명 대통령이 13일 "대전·충남 통합해버리면 충북은 뭣이여 어찌되는겨' 생각이 갑자기 들기 시작했다 한다"며 "가급적이면 광역으로 통합해 지역 경쟁력을 높이는 게 좋지 않을까 생각한다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 충북 청주 오스코에서 열린 '충북의 마음을 듣다' 타운홀 미팅에서 "충청남·북도였는데 충북이 독자적 길을 계속 갈 건지 충남북·대전까지 통합해 하나의 거대한 경제권·행정체계를 만들 건지 여러분들도 진지하게 고민해봐야 할 것 같다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "충남 대전이 통합 한다고 하길래 열심히 했더니 또 갑자기 끽 섰고, 이상하다, 밀면 같이 가야 하는데 반대로 간다"며 "언젠가 지역 통합은 이뤄질 수밖에 없으며 어떤 방식이 과연 바람직할지 앞으로 고민할 시기가 또 올 것"이라고 했다.
또 "지금 국경이 거의 무너지고 모두 국제 경쟁이 돼버렸는데 국제 경쟁은 도시 중심으로 이뤄지는 측면이 있다"며 "전세계적으로 초광역화가 이뤄지고 있으며 광역으로 통합해 지역 경쟁력을 높이는 광역화가 시대적 추세가 됐다"고 했다.
이어 "5극 체제로 편제해 성장·발전 전략을 취하려면 지역 연합을 넘어 통합하는 게 바람직하지 않을까 생각하고 있다"며 "2차 공공기관 이전은 가급적 좀 집중하고, 흩뿌리듯 할 수 있는 상황은 아니다"고 했다.
