국민의힘 중앙당 공천관리위원회(이하 공관위)가 15일 이장우 대전시장과 김태흠 충남지사를 각각 대전시장·충남지사 후보로 단수 공천했다고 밝혔다.
공관위는 이날 배포한 보도자료를 통해 “현역 시도지사인 이장우 시장과 김태흠 지사에 대한 공천을 확정했다”며 “이번 공천을 통해 충청권의 미래를 설계하고 급변하는 시대적 요구에 부응하는 정치를 실현하고자 한다”고 밝혔다.
공관위는 이장우 시장의 공천 배경에 대해 “대한민국의 과학기술 수도인 대전은 대덕연구단지와 수많은 연구기관을 중심으로 국가 혁신을 이끌어 온 도시”라며 “이 시장이 재임 기간 대전을 첨단 과학기술 중심 도시로 발전시키기 위한 다양한 정책을 추진해 왔다”고 설명했다.
이어 “대덕특구 중심의 연구개발 생태계 강화, 첨단산업 유치, 도시 인프라 개선 등 미래 경쟁력 강화를 위한 정책들을 꾸준히 추진해 온 점을 종합적으로 평가했다”며 “이 같은 성과와 행정력을 고려해 이 시장을 대전시장 후보로 확정했다”고 덧붙였다.
공천 확정 직후 이장우 시장은 자신의 SNS를 통해 “국민의힘 대전광역시장 후보로 공천이 확정됐다”며 “일류도시 대전을 만들고 세계 속의 명실상부한 과학 도시로 도약하기 위한 여정을 멈추지 않겠다”고 말했다.
한편 공관위는 김태흠 지사에 대해서도 “충남 발전을 위한 강한 추진력과 검증된 리더십을 바탕으로 산업 기반 강화, 첨단산업 유치, 지역 균형발전 정책 등을 이끌어 왔다”고 평가했다.
이어 “이러한 성과를 종합적으로 고려해 김 지사를 충남지사 후보로 단수 공천하기로 결정했다”고 밝혔다.
