경주시는 16일 오전 감포읍 대본리 옛 대본초등학교 부지에서 ‘문무대왕 해양역사관’ 준공식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.
이날 준공식에는 주낙영 경주시장과 김석기 국회의원을 비롯해 도·시의원, 유관기관 관계자, 지역 주민 등 300여 명이 참석해 역사관 준공을 축하했다.
행사는 신라고취대와 경주시립합창단의 식전 공연을 시작으로 개회, 국민의례, 내빈 소개, 경과보고, 기념사 및 축사, 준공 퍼포먼스, 기념촬영, 전시관 관람 순으로 진행됐다.
문무대왕 해양역사관은 문무대왕릉 일대 해양 역사문화 유적을 체계적으로 소개하기 위해 추진된 시설로, 문무대왕릉 성역화 사업의 핵심 거점 시설로 조성됐다.
경주시는 2015년 사업을 시작해 약 10여 년에 걸친 준비 과정을 거쳐 이번 역사관 준공이라는 결실을 맺었다.
총사업비 153억 원이 투입된 역사관은 폐교된 대본초등학교 부지를 활용해 조성됐으며, 부지 9,089㎡에 연면적 약 1,700㎡ 규모의 지상 2층 건물로 건립됐다.
1층에는 기획전시실과 다목적실, 카페테리아, 기념품숍 등이 마련됐고, 2층에는 문무대왕 역사 전시실과 신라 해양 실크로드 전시실 등 체험형 전시 콘텐츠가 들어섰다.
경주시는 역사관을 통해 문무대왕릉과 감은사지, 이견대 등 동해안 역사 유적을 연결하는 해양문화 관광 기반을 강화하고 지역 관광 활성화에도 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
김석기 국회의원은 “문무대왕 해양역사관 준공은 문무대왕의 호국정신과 해양 개척 정신을 되새기는 뜻깊은 계기가 될 것”이라며 “경주 동해안의 역사문화 자원을 널리 알리고 지역 관광 활성화에도 큰 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “문무대왕 해양역사관은 문무대왕의 호국정신과 해양정신을 널리 알리는 상징적인 공간”이라며 “문무대왕릉과 감은사지, 이견대 등 동해안 역사 유적을 연결하는 해양문화 관광 거점으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 운영에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

The ‘King Munmu Maritime History Museum,’ which commemorates the patriotic and maritime spirit of King Munmu, the 30th king of Silla, has opened its doors on the East Coast of Gyeongju.
The Gyeongju City government announced that it held a completion ceremony for the ‘King Munmu Maritime History Museum’ on the morning of the 16th at the site of the former Daebon Elementary School in Daebon-ri, Gampo-eup.
Approximately 300 people attended the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the museum, including Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young, National Assembly member Kim Seok-gi, provincial and city council members, officials from related organizations, and local residents.
The event proceeded in the following order: opening remarks, national anthem, introduction of guests, progress report, commemorative and congratulatory speeches, completion performance, commemorative photo session, and a tour of the exhibition hall. The King Munmu Maritime History Museum is a facility established to systematically introduce maritime historical and cultural sites in the area surrounding the Tomb of King Munmu, and it was created as a key hub for the project to sanctify the Tomb of King Munmu.
Gyeongju City began the project in 2015 and has achieved the completion of this museum after approximately 10 years of preparation.
With a total project cost of 15.3 billion won, the museum was built on the site of the closed Daebon Elementary School. It is a two-story building with a total floor area of approximately 1,700 square meters on a site of 9,089 square meters.
The first floor houses a special exhibition hall, a multi-purpose room, a cafeteria, and a souvenir shop, while the second floor features experiential exhibition content, including the King Munmu History Exhibition Hall and the Silla Maritime Silk Road Exhibition Hall.
Gyeongju City expects that the museum will strengthen the foundation for maritime cultural tourism connecting historical sites along the East Coast, such as the Tomb of King Munmu, Gamunsa Temple Site, and Igyeondae, and contribute to the revitalization of local tourism. Representative Kim Seok-gi stated, “The completion of the King Munmu Maritime History Museum will serve as a meaningful opportunity to reflect on King Munmu’s patriotic spirit and his pioneering spirit of the seas,” adding, “I expect it to play a significant role in promoting the historical and cultural resources of Gyeongju’s East Coast and revitalizing local tourism.”
Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young said, “The King Munmu Maritime History Museum is a symbolic space for widely publicizing King Munmu’s patriotic spirit and maritime spirit,” and added, “We will do our utmost in its operation to establish it as a hub for maritime cultural tourism that connects historical sites along the East Coast, such as the Tomb of King Munmu, the Gamsansa Temple Site, and Igyeondae.”
