[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 국민의힘 공천관리위원회가 6·3 지방선거 부산시장 후보로 현역 박형준 시장을 컷오프(경선 배제)하고 주진우 의원을 단수 공천하는 방안을 검토한 것으로 알려지자, 박 시장이 16일 긴급 브리핑과 SNS를 통해 이정현 공관위원장을 정면으로 비판했다.
박 시장은 이날 시청에서 기자들과 만나 "무슨 군복 입고 나타나서 칼 휘두르듯이 하는 것 자체가 공천 과정에 대단히 맞지 않다"며 "공천을 잘하기는 어려워도 공천 때문에 판이 깨지는 것은 너무 쉽다"고 말했다. 그는 "공천은 쇼가 아니라 이기는 선거를 위한 수단이며, 정당하게 후보를 가려내 원만하게 새로운 인물이 등장할 수 있도록 길을 열어주는 것"이라고 강조했다.
이어 "원칙과 기준 없이 사람을 잘라내는 걸 혁신 공천이라고 착각하고 있다"며 "더구나 국회의원 선거도 아니고 단체장 선거 중심의 지방선거에서 이런 방식은 이해하기 어렵다"고 지적했다. 박 시장은 특히 "이정현 공관위원장이 혁신 공천이라는 이름으로 당을 망하게 하는 행위이자 망나니 칼춤 그 이상도 이하도 아니다"라며 "이번 선거에서 결정적 중요성을 가진 부산을 포기하고 민주당 후보에게 승리를 헌납하는 행위"라고 강하게 비난했다.
그는 그동안 당내 분열이 선거에 악영향을 미칠 수 있다는 이유로 발언을 자제해왔다고 밝혔다. "당이 분열하는 것은 선거를 앞두고 바람직하지 않다는 입장에서 최대한 말을 아껴왔고, 당이 분열 상황을 수습하고 신속히 지방선거 체제로 전환하기를 기대해 왔다"면서도 최근 상황이 더 이상 참을 수 없는 지경에 이르렀다고 설명했다.
박 시장은 앞서 자신의 페이스북에도 이같은 입장을 올렸다. "공천은 이기는 공천이어야 한다"며 "아무 기준도 없이 현역 단체장을 컷오프하고 단수 공천을 하는 것은 이기는 공천도 아니고 혁신 공천은 더더욱 아니다"라고 썼다. 그는 "부산시민의 의사를 자의적으로 왜곡하는 어떤 공천 시도도 중지돼야 한다"고 덧붙였다.
이번 갈등은 국민의힘 공관위가 16일 회의에서 '혁신 공천' 차원에서 박 시장을 컷오프하고 주진우 의원을 단수 공천하는 방안을 논의한 데서 비롯됐다. 일부 공관위원들은 현역 단체장 대거 교체를 주장한 것으로 전해졌다.
그러나 주진우 의원은 페이스북을 통해 경선을 요구하며 "안정보다는 변화를, 연륜보다는 돌파력을 원하는 것이 부산의 민심이라고 생각한다"라며 "오로지, 부산 시민의 뜻을 받들어 부산에 새바람을 일으키겠다. 치열한 경선을 통해 부산의 미래를 논하고, 부산을 지켜내겠다."라고 했다.
부산 지역 일부 국민의힘 의원들도 단수 공천에 반발하며 경선 필요성을 강조하고 있다. 공관위 내부에서도 이견이 발생한 것으로 알려졌다.

Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon sharply criticized the People Power Party’s Public Official Nomination Committee on June 16, accusing it of pursuing arbitrary and unfair candidate screening ahead of the June 3 local elections.
In an emergency press briefing at Busan City Hall, Mayor Park said, “Showing up in military uniform and swinging a sword around like that is completely inappropriate for the nomination process.” He added, “It’s extremely difficult to get nominations right, but it’s far too easy to break the entire campaign because of them.”
Park emphasized that nominations are “not a show” but “a means to win elections.” He described the proper role of nominations as “fairly selecting candidates and smoothly opening the way for new talent to emerge.” He accused the committee of “mistaking the indiscriminate cutting of people without any principles or standards for ‘innovative nominations.’”
“Moreover, this is not a National Assembly election—it’s a local election centered on executive heads,” he said. “I find this approach very hard to understand.”
The mayor, who is seeking a third term, said he had deliberately refrained from public comments until now to avoid deepening party divisions before the election. “I have held back my words because party infighting ahead of an election is undesirable,” he explained. “I have long hoped the party would quickly resolve its divisions, stabilize the situation, and shift fully into local election mode.”
However, he said recent developments had crossed the line. In a separate Facebook post earlier the same day, Park wrote: “Nominations must be winning nominations. Cutting incumbent executive heads without any criteria and handing out single-candidate nominations is neither a winning strategy nor innovation—it is far from it.”
He went further, directly targeting nomination committee chair Lee Jeong-hyun: “Chairman Lee Jeong-hyun’s so-called ‘innovative nominations’ are nothing more than acts that ruin the party—a reckless sword dance and nothing less.” He warned that such moves would “abandon Busan, which is of decisive importance in this election, and hand victory to the Democratic Party candidate on a silver platter.”
The controversy erupted after reports emerged that the nomination committee was considering excluding the incumbent Park from the primary and granting a single-candidate nomination to first-term lawmaker Joo Jin-woo. Some committee members reportedly pushed hard for large-scale replacement of sitting local executives as part of a generational change drive.

Joo Jin-woo took to Facebook to demand a competitive primary, stating: “I believe what the people of Busan truly want is change rather than stability, and breakthrough energy rather than seasoned experience.” He added: “I will wholeheartedly honor the will of Busan’s citizens and bring fresh winds to the city. Through a fierce primary, we will debate Busan’s future and defend it.”
Local People Power Party lawmakers in Busan have also voiced strong opposition to any single-candidate plan, with some reportedly walking out of committee meetings in protest.

The People Power Party, under Lee Jeong-hyun’s leadership, has emphasized “innovative nominations” focused on generational renewal and party reform. Yet many local politicians argue that in executive-head races—unlike proportional National Assembly elections—incumbents’ organizational strength, name recognition, and governing track record are critical to victory.
Busan remains one of the ruling party’s core strongholds, but recent polls show a tight race, with Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo and others in strong contention. A forced cutoff of Mayor Park could deepen internal rifts, alienate core supporters, and seriously damage the party’s chances in what is widely seen as the most important battleground of the June 3 local elections.
If the committee opts for a competitive primary instead, the contest between the experienced third-term mayor and the younger first-term lawmaker could energize the base and produce a stronger nominee—though the campaign would likely turn bitter.
The nomination committee is expected to make its final decision within days. Park’s camp has repeatedly stressed that any process must prioritize fairness and the goal of “winning” rather than symbolic reform.
