브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 동맹국들에게 요구해온 호르무즈 해협 호위 임무 참여를 돌연 철회하면서 큰 실망감을 표출했다.
트럼프 대통령은 17일(현지 시간) 자신의 소셜미디어 트루스소셜을 통해 "군사적 성공 덕분에 더 이상 나토 국가들의 지원을 필요로 하거나 원하지 않는다"고 밝혔다.
불과 사흘 전까지만 해도 동맹국들의 호르무즈 해협 유조선 호위 임무에 참여하라고 압박하다가 돌연 입장을 바꾼 것이다.
트럼프 대통령은 앞서 한국, 일본, 중국, 영국, 프랑스 등 주요 국가들에게 임무 동참을 공개적으로 요청했으나, 각국은 신중한 태도를 보이며 즉각적인 참여 의사를 밝히지 않았다.
한국 정부 역시 트럼프 대통령의 요구에 대해 "신중한 검토가 필요하다"며 즉답을 내놓지 않았다.
트럼프 대통령은 결국 동맹국들의 소극적인 반응에 대해 불만을 표출했다. 특히 나토를 상대로 강한 불만감을 드러냈다.
트럼프 대통령은 "미국은 나토 동맹국들로부터 이란 정권에 대한 군사작전에 참여하지 않겠다는 통보를 받았다"며 "이란의 핵무기 보유를 막아야 한다는 데는 동의하면서도 행동에 나서지 않는 것은 이해하기 어렵다"고 비판했다.

AP통신에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 같은날 백악관 집무실에 모인 취재진 앞에서도 나토에 대한 비판을 쏟아냈다.
그는 "애초에 나토의 도움은 필요 없었으며, 이번 요청은 동맹을 시험하기 위한 것이었다"고 주장하며 "미국은 세계에서 가장 강력한 국가로, 누구의 도움도 필요로 하지 않는다. 하지만 모든 나토 국가들이 이란 대응에 동의하면서도 실제 행동에 나서지 않는 것은 놀라운 일"이라고 했다.
